I've always thought Shanahan did a pretty good job in his task of assigning punishment, particularly since it's a relatively thankless job. But I've gotta say, between the Weber ruling and these two, I don't know what he's thinking.
Weber intentionally smashes Zetterberg's head into the wall twice and gets nothing. Hagelin accidentally gets an elbow up on Alfredsson and gets three games. Carkner cold-cocks a guy and gets a single game, even though he's got a history of doing that. The only thing that makes sense is that he puts a lot of emphasis on whether or not someone sustains an actual injury (yes in Alfredsson's case, no for Zetterberg and Boyle), but it seems to me that intent ought to weigh just as heavily.
Anyway... interesting stuff. Can't wait to see what comes down from the insanity in Philadelphia today.
