The Official Bill Fitzmaurice Appreciation Thread

I'm currently using a 4 ohm Nemesis 410. It's pretty light, but I prefer the modularity of two smaller cabinets.
I have a Markbass 410. It's relatively light but very large, and the handles are not placed in a convenient way. So it ends up being heavier than it should.
A 2x12 should be easier to transport. Plus, my basic idea is to build two in order to have them ready in two rehearsal rooms.
Let me know how the couple of 12's holds up to your 410.

Well "Fitzmaurice was right".

This paper is not from him, but it restates many of the principles he designs by.

Kudos to the authors and their study and research and Testing. I expect to see some new lightweight bass guitar cabinets out soon. Or more plans at least. ;)

I saved it for future reading but I read the summery and 6mm vs. 18mm with similar results is exciting. Thanks for posting.
 
Interesting read. As a BFM cabinet user who used to haul bug Ampeg and Fender cabinets, I agree that cabinets built using thinner wood, braced and lined, are the way to go. I don't think the idea is really disputed. I think it's just a matter of the extra cost to produce such cabinets.

With a little bit of the correct knowledge and understanding it isn't a revelation. You've been a member as long as I have though... you should well know the kinds of questions that get asked daily and the myths that are perpetuated! :laugh:;)

There are some other brands who have tried lightweight and failed horribly. Enough that bassist end up stuffing a foam pad under the cab to try to calm things down.

It's a good paper of ideas. Software can show panel stresses while doing the physical design. Prototypes built and tested, measured, confirmed with dbt. Cost more? maybe. Automation can save labor cut out time, and save materials. Saves weight saves shipping costs. And gig transportation costs.

Andy Lewis / Acme has been doing this for close to two decades although I can't say it's resulted in any weight savings. The goal was to stress the enclosure resulting in a more desirable point of resonance. I recall seeing a video where Andy was hefting finished cabinetry (no rat fur, drivers or hardware) and whacking 'em with his fingertips. Instead of "thud", you hear a nice well-defined thonk akin to a properly tuned kick drum. The enclosures are stressed to the point that the bulkheads are bulging outward...very evident on the larger series II B4.

Long before Alex built his first barefaced cab he was asking advice about cab construction mainly from two sources, Andy at Acme, and Bill. The first lightweight cross-braced BFM design I saw was published in Speaker Builder magazine in 1997.
I saved it for future reading but I read the summery and 6mm vs. 18mm with similar results is exciting.
BFM Jack Lights are made from 3mm and 6mm.
 
Wish that were a little closer. I'd love to see and hear it.

People who build and use the Fitzmaurice designs tend to know the measurements and what they imply.

That squiggly line on the graph can be drawn in many DAW EQ's and listen on headphones to know how it colors the sound. Then just know the graph also shows it's DB louder than other cabs.

Forums may have more measurements. And Bill's and others input on what they imply.
