I'm another who misses his wit and sense of humor, but I'm a big boy and don't get all butthurt if somebody says I'm coming at something all wrong, then explains why. I like the short, no-bs stuff he'd write.

I'm also another one he gave a free education to.

I'm considering getting the Simplexx plans and have a go at a 2x12.
I have a couple of questions:
- Is there more than one recommended driver? What is the price range to get something that can keep up with a good 4x10 (Markbass)?
- Do the recommended drivers also have 4 ohm versions, in order to build an 8 ohm cab? The idea is to build a second 8 ohm cab down the line and end up with a 4x12.

I will be using a 500W amp, which outputs 300W @ 8 Ohm.

The recommended drivers for the Simplexx 12 (and the Jack 12) are the following Eminence models:
Beta 12, S2012, Deltalite 2512, Delta Pro 12, 3012HO & 3012LF. I'm just finishing a pair of Simplexx 12s.

You're right, they're not in the Jack plans, my mistake! Not only that, but I could swear I read somewhere on the forums that they were less than ideal in the Simplexx.

I'll be using the 2512, but I haven't bought them yet (have a cheap & cheerful MCM driver to mess around with until I get the Eminence units.)

I haven't "read the plans" but the Simplexx look like a speaker in a box, with a few design preferences like corner ports. If you're looking at Eminence drivers, they do have box plans on their website. Not actually what size to cut the boards, but the size and tuning, anyway.

The simplexx, as single driver cabs, aren't likely to have a crossover.... However, if they're like the Jacks, they will have a cap and coil low pass filter to increase midrange response and balance the output. It seems like money well spent if, like me, you don't really know what your doing and aren't going to invest enough time to figure it out on your own.

Right, they will have a filter on the tweeters. I am willing to bet that they are not off the shelf from Eminence though.

Most of those calculators are based pure resistive loads and don't take into account a whole slew of things needed for a good crossover. I would only use them just to get a starting point as far as part values, and only then if your impedance curve is pretty smooth for at least an octave in both directions from your corner frequency, and those still won't be the values you end up with after tweaking.

Doing a crossover that's good for both the speakers and the amp is a whole lot more complicated than punching numbers in a calculator.

Again, I don't have the plans, but I understand that his plans generally specify a list of recommended drivers and general guidelines for alternatives for both LF and HF drivers. It would be interesting if his plans had crossovers which were designed for specific combinations of LF and HF drivers.

I have some of his horn plans but not the Simplexx. As is pretty much standard for him, he has various different crossover plans and porting adjustments, mounting, etc. for all of the driver options recommended for use in that particular design.

Stray from the plans and you're on your own.

He does include a range of specs to look for in other drivers you may be considering and will let you know at his forum whether or not some other driver you're considering will perform ok or not if you just provide the T/S specs and ask. He understands some folks are on tight budgets and/or folks in other countries don't have the same availability or cost as in the US, so he's helpful with guiding people on driver alternatives.

Between the plans and the forum there's all the info you need on any of the designs. The plans are only like $15, small price to pay to get it right the first time. If you can't afford to do it right the first time, how will you ever afford to do it right the second time? :)

I've never built any of his electric bass cabs, but I have built 4 OTop 12's and 4 T48s (24" wide and v-plated) and they absolutely KILL. Concert-quality and level sound all run off two amps and a crossover/limiter (Driverack PA+). People swear I've got other amps hidden behind the cabs, but it's all in one short rack. :D

The forums there are nothing short of superb. Tons of real-world, "here's how I fixed that problem" type, USEFUL assistance, often within a few hours of posting. To top it off, unless you're a blockhead that's deviating from the plans, you're more than likely to get an answer to your questions from Bill himself.
