The Official Crock Pot/Slow Cooker thread

I purposely bought a crock pot to do pulled pork. I was not into the idea of leaving my oven on for up to 7 hours just to get tender pork.

HOWEVER, i didn't realize that i bought a WAY too big crock pot. I had no concept of the fact that too little ingredients is bad for the crock pot (overheating in spots, etc). I ended up following a recipe using a huge piece of pork that literally took almost 17 hours to cook. We started the cooking around 2:00 am (and pretty drunk by that point) to be ready for dinner the next night.

It turned out awesome, but since then i really have not used it. I should've gotten a smaller crock!

One of my favorites is steel cut oats in the crockpot overnight. Once or twice a month, I'll put some apples, cinnamon, etc in the crock pot at night and wake up to some absolutely amazing steel cut oats.

Lots of recipes for crock pot steel cut oatmeal online.

The other one I like- and was amazed by- was simply putting some boneless, skinless chicken in the crockpot and covering with salsa. Makes killer shredded chicken for burritos, enchiladas, etc.

One of my former wives didn't know what a clove of garlic was. She thought it was a whole bulb. That chili was strange to say the least.

Sounds like my kind of dish! :D

I love my crock pot. I've been using it a lot lately. Yesterday I made a chicken stew with sweet potatoes and various veggies, and today I've got some Thai-inspired peanut chicken wings going.

Making pulled chicken-n-pork sandwiches today actually.. made my BBQ sauce from scratch last night so it could chillmix overnight, put the meats on cooking before i tuned up for service this morning

I'm not a big red meat guy, although I do eat it sometimes. Last week I got in the mood for pulled pork, and decided to try a chicken version. I put some boneless breasts, some barbecue sauce, and a little water in the crock pot, let it cook for 6 hours or so, and then took the chicken out and shredded it (it shredded easily enough with a fork and knife after slow-cooking all day), and dumped it back in the sauce. It was very easy and very good.

Before heading off to work today (11-5, short shift on Sundays) I prepped a Guinness Irish stew and got it into the Slow Cooker.........can't wait to get home today. Irish Stew and Sunday Night Football = yay!

Usually looks like this when it's done.

Cheers!

How did it come out? My favorite is the browned crust you get around the edges and bottom.

It was terrible! Waaaaay overcooked. The apples completely disintegrated and the oats got way mushy for my taste. I ate about half a bowl and ended up pouring the whole mess down the disposer.

Soon as I cleaned the crockpot, I loaded it back up with a rack of baby back ribs and a package of pork chips, covered/submerged it in barbecue sauce, and topped it with a nice onion cut in large pieces. Came out a bit overdone again, but not as severe and we've been enjoying the BBQ.

I think my cooker just runs too hot for the time periods I have to cook stuff. I'm considering buying a timer so I can turn it off after four hours. Seems like it stays hot a long time with the lid on so I don't think having it rest in the pot for an additional two hours would be a problem. That or just get another that doesn't run as hot, but the one I have has a removable crock which I really like.

We got one of these Cuisinart pressure cookers about two years ago, and love it! [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
It does everything you want from a crock pot in like 1/3 the time, and it is safer to use than the traditional pressure cooker with the tipping valve. Plus you just program the time in.

The only "complaint" I have is the interior pot has a nonstick coating which obviously won't last forever, it will eventually scratch and flake away--but OTOH I would probably complain if it wasn't nonstick! :p

Great product actually.

Yikes- no good. Oh well, at least the day was salvaged with some pork in the crock pot. :bassist:
