The official gym & weightlifting thread! rep #2

Not really. I pulled something in my left shoulder limiting overhead lifts (military, bench, etc.) and developed golfers elbow (tendonitis, inside part of elbow) in my right arm, which limits the curling motion. Both of these take time to heal especially since I'm old and heal more slowly.

Actually, compared to some here my best is the lighter weights. For now, I just lift very light weights a limited # of times, basically just going through the motions. This is probably a bad idea and makes the healing process longer, but I don't want to wait until senility sets in before I do any lifting.

I had missed the gym (regularly at least) for the past 3-4 months, been too busy getting settled into my phd.

Been going back for a few weeks now tho. Strength based lifts aren't too far from where I was before, but my power based lifts (Cleans & Snatchs) have dropped more than I like. Stamina has also taken a fairly hefty hit. Hopefully be back to scatch in a few weeks to a month tho.

Mon/Wed/Fri with a single routine at the moment to get back into the groove:

3x3 Snatch
3x3 C&J
5x5 Bench press
5x5 Deadlift
5x5 Military/shoulder press
5x5 Shrugs
5x5 Squat
3x10 Tri extension
3x10 Curls

I just went back to hit the iron a week or 2 ago. Had been out of it for like 2 months, funny thing is my muscles are smaller yet im stonger than i was back when i was going to the gym constantly.

That'll be because they have had a chance to completelly heal, when going to the gym constantly, they never really get back up to 100%. So whenever you drop out the gym, a few weeks later you are stronger than you were during :)

Thought I'd bump this up and post how I've been doing with Stronglifts 5x5.
I've only just got really serious with it and it's going really well. the stats I posted here on the 10th July last year were:
Squat - 130Ibs 5x5
Bench Press - 80Ibs 5x5
Overhead Press - 40Ibs 5x5
Deadlift - 145Ibs 1x5

Now, they're:
Squat - 220lb 5x5
Bench Press - 150lb 5x5
Overhead Press - 115lb 5x5
Deadlift - 225lb 1x5

I really love lifting now! It's become a bit of an obsession of mine. My long term goal is to reach a 150kg 3x5 squat and eventually would like to compete in a few years.

That is what I was thinking, how long is your workout?

Ahh, didn't notice the replies to that post.

It was just for getting back into the groove so was lighter weight than I could have managed, just trying to get the body shocked into working again.

Would have been about an hour and a half, not including CV. Timed 1 minute interval between sets, can really fly through the lifts.

Back from an extended TB hiatus - good to see the workout thread is still going with all the regulars!

Dang dude that's a long session! Hopefully you'll switch out of it soon though, right? Eventually I would divide that into 4 or 5 different sessions with an Oly day, a press day, 2 leg days (squat, deads), and maybe a pull/assistance day with curls/tri extensions, etc.. Ramp up the intensity of each lift and then throw in some core stuff at the end of every session. :bassist:

If I'm walking properly after a session at the gym, I've not been working hard enough! :P

I've cut back a bit from that workout, however, my gym going is still too sporadic :-\ .

Going to try something a bit new tomorrow. Going to hit the gym in the morning for some cardio then get into some circuit training. Depending on how I get on with that, will see if I can still hack a mon/wed/fri split which resembles the strongman 5x5 ontop of the circuit training.

Going to be trying this:

Rob's Barbell Circuit Training Routine

Grab barbell with a 10 on each side (65 lbs total), perform exercises with no rest in between (women can use lighter weights, dumbbells will work too):

10 Romanian Deadlifts
10 Bent Over Rows
10 Hang Cleans
10 Front Squats
10 Push Presses
10 Lunges, each leg, with barbell on back

Rest 2-3 minutes, repeat 3 times.

Try to work up to doing this 6-8 times in a workout

Trying to up the ol' stamina during the summer for next season :)

Been doing Rippetoes since mid-May. I'm lifting around 15 pounds more than I was pre-program and I've cut about 8 pounds in the same amount of time.

Tomorrow I'm starting my "official" dieting stage of the summer, 2100 calories every day. Hopefully I'll see some of the weight I've put on at college melt away.

I am currently doing a modified rippetoe workout right now. I adjusted it for my goals and my muscular structure. Right now I have two days that look like this, I do each day twice in a week, upping weight 5lbs at a time once a week (10 lbs at a time on the deads)

Day 1 (pulling muscles)
Rows 5x5 (135 lbs on a cable machine)
Pull downs (only until I hit my body weight, then chin ups) 5x5 (135lbs)
Deadlifts 5x5 (190lbs)
Curls 5x5 (65lbs on a bar)
Those hands squeezing things in between curl sets
20 minute cardio
10 minute jumping rope
stretch it out

Day two (pushing muscles)
Bench press both flat and recline @ 5x5 (130lbs)
Squats 5x5 (160lbs)
Triceps pull down on a cable machine 5x5 (100lbs total)
Arm raises 5x5 (35lbs in each hand)
Dumbbell flys 5x5 (35lbs in each hand)
The hand squeezing things in between sets of flys, 20 in a set
20 minutes cardio
10 minutes jumping rope

I have been getting the results that I am hoping for, the jumping rope does a lot for keeping you trim.

I'm glad to see this one resurface. I'm doing the Stronglifts.com 5x5 program, and here are my current stats:

Squat - 5x5 @ 230lb
Bench Press - 5x5 @ 160lb
Power Cleans (instead of inverted rows): 5x5 @ 145
Overhead Press: 5x5 @ 115
Deadlift: 1x5 @ 300

I warm up every day with strict pullups too, which my max is currently 12.

I recently bought Rippetoe's Starting Strength (2nd ed), Strong Enough, and Practical Programming. Great stuff.

Keep lifting heavy & don't drop that bar!

While I was lifting yesterday, a colleague from my division asked why I was doing sets of 5. I couldn't form the thoughts of sarcoplasmic vs. myofibrillar hypertrophy and strength vs. endurance vs. bodybuilding into words, so I just blurted out "Because Rippetoe says so".

After I said this, I heard a snort from the guy in the squat rack. Turns out he just purchased Starting Strength also & was reading through it.

I'm sure the master from Wichita Falls, TX would appreciate this.

A few things:

1. All my weights are either at or above what they were when I injured my shoulder in April. I think it's made almost a full recovery and will be ready for the rugby season come September; once I get my next MRI I'll know for sure!

2. While all my numbers did go up I saw this cute girl I know at the gym. She's seen me play a few coffee shop gigs and I've talked with her before. As I'm talking I'm getting ready to do my last exercise, incline dumbbell presses. Not realizing that I need to go down on my weight since I went up with my bench, shoulder press, and pec fly I get cocky and say to myself "Hey, I went up with everything else, I'm sure I can do it with this, too!" So I grab heavier dumbbells, get one rep in, no problem. Two in, still no problem. Three in and I crash as she's standing a few feet away. So how do I clean off these wax wings?
