The official gym & weightlifting thread! rep #2

This is awesome. Congrats! How does that relate to your bodyweight?

Just before New Years I got a 445 squat, 495 deadlift, and 275 bench (at 260lbs bodyweight). I'm working to get everything higher. I am also completely & totally drug & supplement free (and always have been). My only lifting aids are some knee wraps, a leather belt, and some old work boots.

213 lbs. when I weighed myself last week. Aiming for the 2x bodyweight deadlift!

I also have a lot of respect for the natural approach you take. The gym I frequent is full of people who make no bones of the fact they juice. As for me, I take protein shakes, but thats it.

Thanks! As for the users - so long as they know the consequences of their decisions, good for them. It is a lot harder to manage getting enough sleep, your diet, lifting heavy, etc. I have not been accused of using yet, probably because I am fatter than I need to be right now. Plus, I only workout in public once a month or less, usually when I go on travel for work. The remainder of the time I'm in my garage, listening to an old Blood, Sweat, & Tears tape. The key is to get to the point where you are a) bigger and b) stronger than they are. Consistent training with conservative incremental increases wins in the long run. My biggest inspiration is Doug Hepburn, who was breaking world records for decades. Sure, he had some demons, but was lifetime drug-free. And from the body-building side, people like John Grimek looked pretty good (and were strong) before Dr. Zeigler's invention became prevalent.

2X BW is my goal at the moment as well - I'm only 25lbs away from it.

Keep lifting!

Congrats on the squat! I'm only 155 so breaking 300 is going to be quite the challenge for me.

Today was the first time I was able to do overhead presses since injuring my shoulder. Under the advice of my physical therapist I started with machines and will gradually work my way back to free weights. As for tomorrow, I have a 4 mile run planned before work.

Today is day 3 of StrongLifts for me. The diet has been pretty bad, but I think I'm finally moving past the carb cravings.

Yeah, my diet has been what's holding me back in my gains. But for me, I actually need to add more carbs. I'm finding myself lacking energy in my workout. I use to work out for an hour to an hour and a half 5 days a week. Nowadays I'm lucky just to make it to 45 minutes without wanting to stop.

I try to cut it off around the 45 minute mark. When your program is only 3-4 lift typed a day, it isn't too hard to get in and out unless the gym is flooded with people. I think the New Year's resolution crowd is finally giving it the "this is too hard, I quit."

The thing that kills me is my unnatural hatred of pure cardio. I can play sports all day, but I absolutely refuse to be near a treadmill or walking track.

I picked up a new Brita filter today. Tennessee water can just be gross sometimes. :hmm:

Haha! Knoxville water is so gross. If you pour a glass let it sit for a minute and then look at the bottom of the glass you'll see all these black flakes hanging out. I have no clue what the stuff is but it's gross!

That said you should definitely try Memphis water sometime. I swear it's better than any bottled or filtered water out there!

My brother and I used to think leg press was for sissies. Yesterday was 4 working sets of squats with a warm up of 135x20, heavy of 275x8. Went over and alternated leg press and hack squats for 3 sets. The Leg press kicked my ass after about 8 at 450lbs. I was barely able to make it down the stairs to the locker room.

I really like leg day, mostly because I find that's where I have my fastest gains.

I'm sticking on my chest and find it hard to break my max of 275. I've been able to rep 225 for a while but my bench is pretty stagnant. I'm hoping to work shoulders and triceps to boost it but its slow.

I think it depends on the leg press machine.

The one we have at our gym just has a weight stack. I could do working sets of squats 5x5x110Kg (242lbs) and afterwards be able to fire out a couple sets of 20x200Kg (440lbs) on the leg press (that was as much weight as you could set it to have).

Old school hack squats are awesome all the time tho!:bassist:

Just so you know, when you're doing legs you don't want to be doing less than 15 reps at a time, otherwise you're not working your leg out to its fullest potential - or at least that's what I've always heard/read. My instructor even mentioned it in the class I took, so I'd consider it a good rule of thumb to adhere to.

Is that total reps or per set? We usually hit 25 working reps per day, not counting warm-ups.

Per set.

For leg press I'll usually do three sets of 20 reps (so 60 total), with each set going up in weight. For calf raises I'll usually do the same (20 reps per set, three sets total). For lunges, however, I'll just do 8-12 reps (for each leg) per set.

It all depends on your goals, and the reason you are lifting weights. Low reps (up to 5 build strength), higher reps build endurance and hypertrophy (muscle growth). As your sets of 15 reps increase, your 1 rep max for that lift will also increase, but you are not specifically training for a 1RM.

In other news, I got a new personal best on the bench today - 295lb. I have been training with a full 3-count pause at the bottom, but I did the 295 touch-and-go (down, touch-the-chest, immediately up). This is 20lbs better than what I did in December. Getting a little stronger every day!

I just saw this thread ... never look under the section ... if you are training natural, you are very correct cutting the session off at 40-45 minutes ... and bottled DISTILLED water is your best friend if in training :)

For anyone interested in leg training, probably the best read that I have ever found is a book called "Super Squats", by Randall Strossen ... it is from the old school world of training, but then so was I ... it pretty much leaves everything else in the dust when it comes to leg development ... not that it all doesn't have its place and time, but the info in this read will definitely change the way you structure your leg workouts ... Same here. We bought a treadmill with a TV on it, and I still won't use it. Although I did one time last season to watch a Pens game.
