Hmm, I guess I will start giving a try. I had damaged the back of my knee when I was like 12 from playing football. Ever since I have always been cautious with my knee/legs.... Actually, I have no been very cautious and repeated hurt myself through out the years lol

But yeah, I do no go as much as i want to go because I am dependent on people for rides home. So I go when I can. I usually get there once a week and do the bike for cardio (the treadmill and elliptical are too rough on knee joints) for half hour to an hour. Than I usually do some chest/tricep and a bit of abs.

Once I get my car, I plan on joining a martial arts class, most likely akkido since I am well balanced and sorta built for it. That is when I plan on giving more than 110% to working out when I am not at my job.

I've moved to more wall sits and less squats. A lot harder for me to do a wall sit with arms extended for 3 mins than 100 squats. For a harder workout I like to put bowling pins and balance them on my thighs and do sets of 2 min wall sits. Add ring weights (is there a name for these? they're Just big circles people put on their wrists for workouts.) to your wrists and you have a cool leg workout.

Hmm. Perhaps I will try this now. I messed up my knee playing football when I was 12, 12 years later it still occassionally acts up because its permenant damage. I have scarring behind my knee or something. I usually do an 30-60 minutes of cardio via the bike since the treadmill and elliptical are too rough on my joints.

My only thing is that I need a car to get there. I am too dependent on people to sacrifice a ride. However, once I do get a ride, I plan on taking a martial arts class. Perhaps Hapkido since I have the balance and I am more built for that.

I've actually never gotten into squats because I've never had anyone to show me proper technique or simply be there to spot me. That, and my legs are kinda funny when it comes to moves like that. I'm not sure if it's all the soccer I played growing up or if my muscles simply aren't use to that sort of motion, but whenever I try do a squat my muscles get super tense and I often end up cramping.

Technique wise, I think Rippetoe's videos and SquatRX are good places to start. Check Youtube for them.

As for awkward movement, it might just be a matter of getting used to, or that you have tight glutes, hams, and/or hip flexor. See if you can get a hold of foam rollers and loosen them up. Squats are great for a soccer player, both high-bar and low-bar.

Weightlifting will have more controlled movements than martial arts, so you should be ok, as long as you make sure to warm up (both cardio and with weights) and stretch out (at least afterwards). 7-8 years back I tore my achillies tendon pretty badly, took about 9 months til I was able to walk properly again. Still gives me some problems but making sure everything is warmed up and moving helps massively.

Have you ever had some physio to see what can be done?

I'll definitely give those a look. Thanks!

Here are some new figures I've got:

Bench: 170lbs x5 (a small gain, but a gain nonetheless :D)
Calf Raises: 300lbs x15
Single Arm Machine Row: 160lbs x12

Anyone used any 3x3 programs?

I've had good progress with 5x5/5x3 programs, just thinking of changing it up for a bit

It should enable you to use a slightly heavier weight for a triple than for 5 sets of 3 (unless I misread that as 3 sets of 5). This will prepare you nicely for testing singles after a few weeks of doing triples (with increasingly heavier loads, of course), by helping to increase your tendon strength.

I'm currently doing the opposite. I just started doing a single set of 20 reps on the squat, 3X/week, with a 5lb increase each time. Today I am shooting for 245lb. For all of the other lifts, I have been working on 4x10, and increasing when I can meet all sets at least twice. Increase depends on the exercise. I cannot always do 10 on the higher weight, but I add a rep or two each session.

I took three weeks off due to school work, overseas travel for work, having the flu, and also a family member's wedding. It has been really nice to get back to the iron, even if my strength has decreased somewhat. Today's workout will be at the YWCA in downtown Minneapolis.

To the end of being weaksauce!

Aye, sorry, probably should have clarified. I've been doing 5 rep programs with sets of either 3 or 5. So it would be cutting the reps.

I've been out of it for a while too, busy with work, went abroad with work then the first week back managed to ruin my back at training (rugby), then when I 'got better' a fortnight later I managed to do the same thing :( .

Those are nice high reps! Good luck :D

Been a while since this thread's seen some action. Anything new and exciting folks?

Male, 26, 5'11", 210 @ ~20%bf

These are all 3x5.
Bench: 145 lb.
Squat: 265 lb.
DL: 325 lb.
Overhead press: 110 lb.
Barbell rows: 135 lb.
Curls: 60 lb.

Lifting while eating deficit kinda sucks. :hmm:

Since I've posted this back in September, my lifts haven't gone anywhere - I was without a job for couple months and motivation was pretty much nonexistent. Job situation sorted, and am trying to get back into it now. :hyper:

Great to hear you got a job! I imagine it is okay to let the squats stagnate while looking for a source of income!

I stopped doing the 20 rep squats about a month ago - I was on travel and they didn't have a power rack - I did front squats instead, cleaning the weight. I got up to 200 for 5x5.

Last week, I got a powerclean for 225, 2 reps, and deadlifted 435lb, conventional style (vice sumo-style).

They are improving, bit by bit. I've been reading alot about Doug Hepburn recently, and am trying his training style out (work up to 8 sets of 3, drop weight 20% & do 3 "mass sets", working up to 3 sets of 8 reps). Very slow progress, but it will teach me patience.

Well after three months of being unable to lift (two thanks to my thesis, comps, moving cross-country, and one helluva crazy work schedule, one due to pneumonia) I'm back in the gym. Since I've moved I joined up with a 24 Hour Fitness and so far I like it a lot (especially the cardio section ;)). What's most surprising is while I've had muscle atrophy, most of my numbers stayed the exact same  My stamina's crap but that'll recover in time.

Glad to be back! :hyper:

Good to hear things are working out for you!

I had a similar experience as you - I think between September and December, I lost a bit less than 10lbs. and I could easily feel and see the difference in the mirror, but getting back into it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Sometimes you don't lose much of the actual muscle tissue, but because it isn't being engaged as much, the blood flow and tissue fluids are slightly reduced. Also, thanks to good old musclular memory, any losses will grow back fairly quickly :)

I still need to go back to the gym, managed to screw my back in a game a week and a half ago :(

I just got back into working out about 3 weeks ago after taking all of Christmas Break off. The first thing I noticed was that my max dropped across the board, but only by a small amount. I also noticed my stamina wasn't nearly as good. Despite this, however, I've already gained most my strength and stamina back within these short 3 weeks.

Unfortunately, I've put on a bit of a holiday weight that I'll need to work off before I start seeing results again :hiding:

I hurt my brachialis this summer & didn't touch a barbell from August until Jan 3. During that span, I went on a see-food diet & drank every day except one, mostly beer.

Needless to say, by New Years I felt like crap.

After a week of eating properly & getting back to lifting, I felt a thousand times better. I'm now in my 4th week, and feel like a million bucks. (and just made the promise I'll never let myself go like that again for about the 14th time.....)

So, we have a "The Biggest Loser" competition at work. It's been a long time since I've worried about my weight, but do to a poor diet and my lack of intramurals due to some nasty nagging injuries, I've been pretty inactive for a while. I'm finally medically cleared to participate in sporting events, and I think this is the perfect time to cut some weight.

Current stats:

Height: 6'3
Weight: 260
BMI: 32

Goals:

Height: 6'6 (why not?)
Weight: 215-225
BMI: sub-25 I'm a big boy, and I realize fully that 3 months is a short time to completely shred my body, better shape is a journey and not just some end result.

I haven't cut this much weight since my football and wrestling days, so this is going to be an adventure. I'm going to have to completely overhaul my diet. I'm planning on cutting sodas out, and that's enough calories for about a pound a day (Yikes!), and I've cut back on the alcohol. I need to divide my meals in half so I'm eating 6 times a day or so and I need to basically only drink water. Booze is being cut back to once a week and I'm going to allow myself a bi-weekly cheat meal.

As far as exercise is concerned, I'm going for 3 days lifting, 2 days of cardio, 1 rest day, and a day of stretching only. If I'm not pushing myself, or pushing myself too far, that can be adjusted some.

Grand Prize is $500, runner up gets $250 and if we beat the other stores that are doing it, the money is doubled.

Happy lifting!
