The stock pickup's dimensions are those of a standard P, meaning each "box" is 56mm x 28mm. Top box has 3 poles and the bottom one has only 2 (top one missing). It's positioned more cramped than a standard 4 string P, meaning less offset amongst both halves. For this kind of layout (same dimensions for both pickups, just one has 2 polepieces/sets of polepieces) it seems my only options are either the Delano small poles P pickup (PC 5 AL/M2) or the Nordstrand NP5. I simply won't spend 120+€ on any of these pickups. Cheapo 5 string P pickups are non-symmetrical (halves are different size), so I was looking for 4 string P pickups (of which I know there's a wide variety of cheapos to choose from) with as spread a "polepiece zone" as possible (a regular 2 small pilepieces per string P pickup just won't cover wide enough) and ran into Link Removed, which costs less than 20€. Now I did some figuring out in PowerPoint and it looks like it might work in my Jake 5.

I thought the last third was the "darkest", oh well, different strokes. You may want to check out Bill Lawrence. Bill has passd but his wife still carries on. I think the best bang for the pbass buck out there.

Oh, that's a great alternative on a budget and I even read it does great with the low B. I was just roughly checking measurements and altho' it'd make it into the current cavities I don't have a clear idea of how it'd work, pole pieces not being "orthodoxically" placed. I added the P-46 to the diagram...

Now, would the A string sound noticeably louder than the others with this funky pole piece alignment? In all fairness, my Jake has 17mm spacing at the bridge so there's probably around 1 less mm spacing in the P PU zone (meaning the strings are a little closer together than in my diagram).

Thanks! So I think that color is just called trans blue. On Public Peace's YouTube channel there's a video called "Domanski humbuckers" which features a Joker B bass. I simply asked for mine to be as close to that color as possible. Mine ended up being quite a bit darker but I'm actually really glad because I think it looks amazing. On the order form Adrian put: "Trans blue, photo, Hals vintage tinted". Feel free to just send him that pic of my bass for reference!

That's basically the one I want, but in a fretless headless with the Delano oval pickups. Actually, a matched fretted and fretless pair would be heavenly. I wonder if he would consider a double neck?

I considered the oval Delano's just because they make the bass look that much more exotic and sort of super European, but the SBC's sound better to me. I watched pretty much every Public Peace YouTube video, and whenever the sound really grabbed me it was the SBC's.

I believe they're made that way to accomdate a 5 as well. I used it with a four no problem. They have a pretty high output level. Be sure to give a listen on the Youtubes to see if you like, pbass pickups can vary a lot.

I've seen so in some 5 string photos with this pickup and they look much alike what I predict for mine so great. Thanx a lot. I've listened to several videos and really dig the tone. Before pulling the trigger I'm doing a final attempt with the Delano P, I'll try making it a 4 connector humbucker and try parallel (I asume this comes series, most if not all P pickups do) which will lower impedance, thus resulting in a brighter tone. And even if I decide getting another pickup, a series/parallel switch for it is still in my plans.

I just tried this. Piece if cake, I mean, I cut the cable joining both halves, then shorted both poles in that cable for the half that already had the long cable going to the PU blend pot, also prolonged the cable for the other half to make it to the blend pot too, finally soldered them parallel to the blend pot.

It does what it should, the tone has more presence as expected and also some volume mismatch I had when blending towards the P pickup is gone now. It's still not that great a P tone anyway. I'll give it some time and gigs, then decide if I go the P46 route. I don't doubt a P46 will be noticealy better both at sounding more "precision" and less scooped.

I love this bass. It really is everything I hoped it would be and more. I'm proud to play an instrument with the Maruszczyk 'M' on the headstock. They're a great company and Adrian is a great guy, as I can personally confirm at this point.
