I have no other basses by Marucsczyk, but my Sputnik is flat out INSANE. I have owned literally every major (and many smaller) custom bass builder's basses. Mine is obviously a set neck, and the string response on the open B, E and A strings is among the finest I have played. It and my Muckleroy are my 2 go-to basses (out of 17 currently, among them, custom F Bass, Nordstrand, Fodera, Elrick, Roscoe, Eshenbaugh, Alleva-Coppolo and Celinder. Mine is a seriously excellent MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, not just a bass.

That's great to hear! When I spec out a Sputnik I get to around the $3k mark, which is about my upper limit. But then that also gets you into used Roscoe/Elrick territory, and all of a sudden the decision becomes more difficult. But then those are all 34 or 35, and I really do want 33.

Those Mucks also look amazing, I'm not a huge fan of the body style though, but I can see how they would play amazing.

The only Thing that you have to keep in mind, is that there are two slightly different Joker Shapings, in Relation to the upper Horn, wich has -i think- some ergonomic/neck diving reasons, maybe... The Joker was constructed as a 30"/32" Scale Bass, but they also do 34/35" Scale Joker, as i ordered mine in 34"Scale.

Has anyone with a 32" Maruszczyk or Mensinger compared the Maruszczyk M4DN strings (which I was told were medium scale but as viewed on my new Elwood seem like they could be long scale) with D'addario EXL160M (50-70-85-105)? I haven't seen the latter strings discussed yet in this multi-year thread.

Excellent choice! Yes, many players go with wood tops, which I like too, but your Frog and mine have a kind of "vintage meets modern" vibe. Very beautiful too.... :thumbsup::cool:

P S. How does it play and sound?

Yeah, but I can't deny that if there is a next time, I wouldn't go with wood tops...:drool:


The premise is that I'm a "medium scale bass guy" and haven't played many basses.

The custom neck with 32" scale, 17.5mm string spacing, and 20" fingerboard radius is comfortable.
On the other hand, I like the feel of the non-compact body, but I'm concerned about the "body dive" (the opposite of neck dive).

There is no heavy bass, but it is responsive.
The sweet middle comes forward when roll off the tone. In addition, I like to blend the rear pickup slightly more.

I love it the best I've played so far, but I plan to some modify.

So the basses are of equal quality? And the companies are related?

When I first went to the website, I was confused a bit by the name Maruszczyk not being in the domain name. But if Public Peace is the home of a family of companies, that makes more sense.

For the purpose of this thread, does Mensinger = Maruszczyk? I've seen what appear to be Mensinger basses posted here.

As far as I have heard, yes, Mensinger and Maruszczyk basses will most likely have similar quality. Whether the companies are (legally) related, I don't know.

Adrian Maruszczyk himself is based in Germany, his legally registered company is called Public Peace and markets Maruszczyk basses and Mensinger instruments as well as other music related brands.

As both Maruszczyk and Mensinger instruments are made in the same manufacturing facility, this club here on tb has developed into a place for players interested in both brands.

I think so, yes. For me, Maruszczyk and Mensinger are the same brand.

I had a Cazpar and the quality is equal to the Maruszczyk.

I have not ordered one yet, but in my research it seemed a lot of people in the US used FretSpot.com and were happy with the process. That’s the way I’ve been leaning, I just need to finally decide on which specs I want! :)
