More than weight, I find that balance is very important. I haven't measured the weight of my Elwood C5a, it's not hefty but it's not a lightweight either... But it's quite balanced, despite the lack of lightweight tuners. It hangs really well on my strap, and as such it's comfortable to play.

I'm still debating going for a Maruszczyk or a Valenti for my next bass project. I know I want a good 4 string to add to my arsenal (both my current 4 stringers are good enough but not outstanding instruments either - mexican Fender and indonesian Sterling SUB). There's quite a price difference (more than £850 - $1175) between the two, the Maruszczyk being the cheapest option here... plus the wait time for the Valenti is 8-9 months, whereas the Maruszczyk could be done in 3.

So yeah, here's what I'm thinking of, if I were to go the Maru route again:

-Inca Silver Metallic finish (might go with Satin, not sure. Adrian said that it's a bit stupid to go with Satin with a metallic finish as there's no shine to it, but hey, personal taste :) )
-Alder body, maple neck and fretboard (matte finish). Classic.
-Hipshot Ultra light tuners
-Potentially B style bridge from Hipshot, maybe the standard Maru one, not sure yet.
-Passive
-Delano JC4-AL/M2 pickups: hum-cancelling split coil pickups, in 60's position (standard Maruszczyk position is 70's).


An all-round Jazz Bass... cheaper than an american made Fender :)




Or if I've got the patience and the money, I'll get something similar built with Valenti. Time will tell, not ordering for a few months anyway.

Does anyone here have an Elwood or a Jake with a non-angled headstock and a string retainer/tree?

If yes, how does it interact with the zero-fret? I asked Adrian if it's possible to make a flat headstock with a string retainer, and said it doesn't work well with the zero-fret... seems to work well on Sandbergs though.

If Adrian thinks it doesn't work well, I doubt that he ever made an instrument without the angled headstock.... Why are you worried about it?

That's correct. What I've seen today when I first changed strings on my Elwood is that there are grooves filed behind the nut towards the headstock into the descending rosewood of the fretboard. Sorry I forgot to picture this...

I might just deal with it and go with the usual slanted headstock with my potential next Elwood C4p. After all it works fine on my Elwood C5a.

Speaking of it, I've been playing it a LOT recently and it's the best bass I've owned. It plays so smoothly, it's well balanced, it looks fantastic, and it sounds good (nothing spectacular in that aspect, yes it sounds great in a band setting but it's just "ok" at home. Probably due to my crappy combo!). Finish is great too, no flaws.

All in all a great bass, made to my specs, for cheaper than an American Fender (at least here in the UK). That's what makes me want to get another one made, this time in 4 string. That, or a Valenti, but being in the UK it might end up way more expensive than the Maruszczyk. I'll decide when I have enough funds.

I guess, i have to proof my patience first... Right now, i am in Week 14. Adrian expected the Load of bew Basses (including mine) on Friday, but it seems they were delayed. Maybe much Traffic or a Covid-19 reasoned Backlog at the polish Border. Adrian hopes the Basses to arrive on Monday. :whistle:

apart from that, a semi hollow bass with a domed top probably does a little more work than a normal solid body bass

Mine has been stuck in Koeln for over a week as well.
