I can relate! Ever since I’ve gotten this Elwood L it’s all I play. I even sold my Fodera. Well okay, I did move to short scale basses - but I don’t miss the Fodera.

First active bass I’ve ever had. It will do it all!

What was your final wait time for this exquisite beast? I ordered early July so I’m less than halfway through the anticipated completion date. Beautiful bass. I might have to configure a paddock now. Haha

Thanks! Maru really delivered, beautiful bass indeed.
My waiting time was 5 months and 1 day and the bass was in my hands. Made the order 15th of March and played the first notes with it 16th of August, so the building time was a bit less than 5 months. The delivery was fast - I live in Finland so no customs within EU.

Sometimes they’re early. My Elwood L was done in 12 weeks earlier this year, even though the ETA was 16-20!

I got my Elwood short scale in Jan 2022, and after a bunch of gigs, practices and a few recordings, I'm pretty confident in saying it's the best bass I've ever owned. Even more impressive considering it didn't cost me much more than higher end MIM Fenders do now.

I've experimented with different pickup combinations, but I always end up back using the P only in a band mix. The MM is fun to play around with at home, and I'm glad I have the option - those Delanos have a real kick to them.

I'm pretty tempted to try and sell off most of my other basses and order a second, either 34" or multiscale, Maruszczyk for lower tunings and call it quits there for now.

Just realized that I never made a post since my Jake arrived!

It came in early May and I've been in love with it ever since. It's super comfortable, super light, and sounds incredible. It's my first fretless and I've been having so much fun learning on it.

Took it to its first gig the other weekend since my band was playing mostly originals instead of covers. It sounded great and the rest of my band liked it too.

Build specs:
* Jake L 5a-24
* Chambered ash body, maple neck, 24 "fret" ebony fingerboard with mini ghost lines
* Delano SBC pickups
* Lusithand Double NFP preamp
* Series/single coil/parallel switches
* nut width of 45mm
* Hipshot A-style bridge with 17.5mm string spacing
* Elwood L headstock

The pickup switching and the filter preamp combines for a huge variety of tones. It's been my ideal rock fretless bass and I'm very happy with it.

I do have a small complaint. Both pickups were wired for series/single coil (bridge coil)/parallel so that when both were in single coil mode, I would not get the hum canceling effect. To be fair, the wiring diagram that Delano provides only shows the wiring for the bridge coil, and I had to email them myself to get the series/single coil (neck coil)/parallel wiring. Luckily, it was an easy enough solder job to do myself.





I also realized that the names Jake and Elwood are from the main characters of the movie The Blues Brothers.

If so, if I move to a thicker gauge string to increase tension—specifically, I would like a bit more on the B string and thinking of using a .135, the others feel fine to me—would I need to widen the slot for the B? Just trying to plan ahead as the strings will take a week to arrive. I think Maru uses .125 for their Bs. I just realized I forgot to request this when the order was placed

Depends on how close they cut the slot to the string gauge. You definitely want that B string to be well seated on the nut, so a few passes with a nut file may be needed. Not a big deal for any tech. I bought a cheap set of files off Amazon. It's not a bad investment.

My 32” is a headless with a zero nut, so no issues at all with larger gauges although a .130 is fine for me.

My build is very similar to yours and am very eager to get my hands on it. Specifically how do you like the feel of the 32” scale on a 5er (other than the b string issue)?

So far I am loving it. I am in a very busy period at work right now so I haven’t had time to do a setup, but it’s super comfortable and there are so many tones with the Uni Pre and pickup switches. I feel like my fingers have more stamina with the shorter stretch, even though I think I have fairly long fingers.

The only thing I think I’ll need time with is that B. It’s very clanky and producing a chorusing effect when played on the higher notes. I’m thinking a proper setup, thicker strings, and getting some distance between the string and the pickups should fix those issues. Other than that, I’m very happy so far.

I'm coming up on 16 weeks this week for my Elwood L order. Fingers crossed that I get a couch pic in the next week or so.

It's been a while since I played with the configurator. Eventually, I'm going to order a 5-string twin to my 4-string Frog. I won't decide the color until I order, but most likely it will be the same color scheme as the one I have (currently in my avatar).

It's going to be a while, though. I'm currently in the process of getting a bass built by Ruokangas -- and by "in the process" I mean I sent him a deposit a month ago. It should be completed in the first few months of next year. It will be the most expensive instrument I will have purchased to date, and it will take a while for my finances to recover enough for another bass. Ruokangas has a configurator, too, but it doesn't have his bass included in it yet. Nevertheless, I have a close approximation of the bass I'm ordering, it's one of two neck-through basses they built earlier this year (their basses normally have bolt-on necks). Here it is.
