If you are talking a configurator build, I paid maybe a couple hundred more that what it showed on the configurator. But, I added an option to mine that wasn't on the configurator, so that might have bumped it a bit. The rest, I guess is the shipping and whatever tax and duties there were. In any event, I thought the bottom line price was very fair for what I got.

So, my Elwood Absolution 6a-24 arrived -- early! Wasn't supposed to arrive until Tuesday, but here it is! And so far so good! First things first: the craftsmanship is really stunning. I mean, it is just cosmetically flawless and feels great. Setup was almost perfect right out of the case, too. Just a couple minor tweaks to the bridge and it already feels killer. And I'm totally digging the passive mode sound and the single coils. I was worried about 60-cycle hum but it's barely noticeable. I've only been messing with it for about an hour, but completely wowed by it so far.

I opted for some hum cancelling Delano pickups with my build. May I ask what pickups you chose?

If a couple hundred is it, then you are probably correct. Good to know!

Well, my bass was "off the rack," not custom. I had been looking around for a while, logging serious time on Reverb.com, then started to get totally hooked on the Maruszczyk basses I saw, then started checking out the Public Peace site, etc. So I confess that my purchase was not as specific as a custom order. Mine is equipped with Delano JC6HE pickups, and I have very little notion of what that means (I need to investigate). I had assumed they were single coil, but now I need to look up the specs, because they are AMAZINGLY quiet. I'm one of those ppl who pretty much plays the bridge pup exclusively, so I was concerned about hum, but this thing is really quiet. So much so that now I'm wondering if my Delanos are actually stacked dual-coils. I mean, it's really surprisingly quiet.

Ha! Okay, well, that explains it. My pups are split coil, which explains the lack of hum! Seriously: I've been extremely lucky this last week. Last night I dropped my freaking iPhone in water; totally submerged. Grabbed it out super quick, but still. At first, it mostly worked, except it was stuck in headphone mode. No sound, in other words. So, I'm thinking: I'm screwed. But I wake up today, and the damn thing is working fine. Then, expecting my new bass to arrive next Tuesday (that was the estimate), just on a lark I checked the tracking number, and it says my bass has arrived in town! True story: At this point it was about 11:00, and Fedex said the bass was on the delivery truck at 8:45, so I'm thinking I may have already missed it. So I literally walk down to my front door, open it to see if I have the dreaded "we tried to deliver your package" notice, and the freaking Fedex truck as JUST PULLED UP to my house. I'm not stepping outside for the rest of the weekend. My Elwood is so great and I'm so pleased with it, and my iPhone still works... If I walk outside, karma demands that I get hit by a meteor. My luck has been that good the last two days.

I've got a few more months to go before I get my Elwood 5a. When you posted that your single coils had no noise, I was worried that the choice that I'd made might not only be overkill but also make me lose some of the character I was seeking. I'm getting the 5-string set of your pups. I'm now very encouraged after reading your report!

At any rate, I'm still getting used to the new bass, but the info I got from this thread was immensely useful, so thanks! I'll try to give back by logging some first impressions. As I said earlier, I just cannot find fault with any of the craftsmanship. I'm actually really blown away by the quality of the binding, which is all MOP. I mean, I looked it up and down, neck and body, and the binding is perfect. So uniform and beautifully applied, even where the fretboard binding transitions to the headstock. The one-piece flame maple neck is just stunning. I can't stop staring at it. Now, the bass is essentially alder core with maple top and back; the top maple is flamey as hell and gorgeous and beautifully matched. The back looks like a single piece and isn't flamed, but who cares (certainly wasn't expecting them to waste flame on the back). I've got big hands and I play six-string and I'm a stickler for full accessibility at the top fret, and the Elwood totally grants it. Not as spacious as my Modulus Q6, but close enough and way better than my Ibanez. On the subject of the C-string, it is very slinky and not as tight and painful as my other 34" basses, which is an unexpected surprise. I haven't played this body style in ages, so it feels a little different because the upper horn doesn't project as far as my other basses (so the top of the neck feels a little "farther away" when I'm standing). Sitting, the bass is fantastically balanced. As far as the feel: the J-bass pups are an adjustment for me because I've been playing soapbars for ages. I was pleased to find that they feel great under my fingers; I'm not digging in too much as I had feared, or playing over empty space. But they bridge pup is situated slightly closer to the bridge than my other basses. This means the strings feel a little tighter, but they also sound tighter, which makes for a great plucky sound. The B and E are super strong on this bass. I had to back the pup off a little, which was actually encouraging (my Ibanez has a really weak sounding B). So those are my impressions so far. More later as I get to know my Absolution better!

Everything I own now has active/passive functionality and it's important to me that each bass sounds good in each mode. Passive is probably my preferred tone but I sometimes find that active works better for me playing live or jamming.

I purchased an "off the rack" Elwood 4a back in December. Prior to getting it some reports I saw were that the Maruszczyk bassed felt cheap and used poor components. All I have to say about that is the following. Please......

One last thing I'll say for now: I know it seems dumb, but all the little extras that came with the bass were a total sweet surprise and made me really happy. I mean, in emailing Adrian, I had mentioned that I really like his playing, so he threw in a CD of his band. And the packet of stuff they send you with the bass: the certificates and pamphlet explaining the features and attributes of your bass, hand-written. I'm an American, so I'm supposed to be a cynic when it comes to "consumerism," but sorry, Adrian is doing it proper right now. At this point in my life, I'm pretty militant and even neurotic about equating time with money, so everything I buy is subjected to the calculation: "Wait, I had to work how many hours to buy this?" It's been less than a day, but I just spun around and looked at it again, and my fingers are still tingling a little from just playing it, and I'm totally satisfied. So serious props to Maruszczyk!

Congratulations, good you took the plunge! I have those pickups in my Elwood L 5, very warm, fat and round sounding.

So is the bass heavy? And how does the bound body feel for your right arm? I would assume that the body is not as rounded?

The reason why I ask is because I've seen two seprate Elwood 6a basses, one with a flame maple and the other with a birds eye neck, both look insanely good ( I am talk about you five six seven and that bad ass 6er of yours)! I placed my order back in the end of November and now am having the crazy idea to change my neck from all flame maple to a birdseye/flame/birdseye neck.
