The "Official" MTD (non-US made) Club Part 2

Time to pick the brains of MTD owners. I'm interested in buying a Z6 and will be modding it with either Nord Big Splits or DC's and an Audere Pre. I like the look of the Pickup covers on the MTD but I've noticed on this thread that eveyone thats modded the pups never use the original covers. Is that because they don't fit or they're just not wanted anymore?

I dont own a standard Z. But, im pretty sure that the internals are epoxied into the wood. Can anyone shed some light here??
Good idea on upgrading!! Awesome bass, crummy electronics.

I think I bought one if the first Active Heir 5s available in the US, sn 03100666:

At the time it was pretty much the only color available. I'd been scouring BassNW and Bass Central for a month waiting on the stock to come in and grabbed up the first one I saw (ended up being from BassNW)

I've had my KZ-5er for a while now and while I love the feel and weight and shape, I just can't get the B-string to sound nice and clear. I've upgraded to 24v and that gave me some more head room, but the B still sounds like mush. I've put new MTD strings on it and that helped a bit...but it is still not where I'd like it.

I got to play a 535 this weekend at a conference held at our church and it was a religious experience!! (Thanks Aaron!) Outstanding B string...nice and clear and punchy. I didn't think twice about using it as I do on my KZ. Obviously a huge difference in $$ and such...but I can't afford a 535.

Would upgrading to Barts "fix" it or should I just sell everything I own for a 535? :help:

24v, eh? Hmmm...do you have two 12v batteries? Where from? Brand?

...before doing anything drastic, check the pickup height...my luthier checks fastidiously to make sure that mine are set a the optimal level...not too high, not too low...to get the best response from my strings.

I can imagine the 535 was a treat to play! I'd just have someone go over the Z5 and give it a good set up+intonation with your strings of choice.

Oh good grief...I'm in telecom and have been working on 24v systems all day!!! I meant to say 18v...and Rev...you're the one that gave me the direction!

Oh, okay! Was just wondering, because on a thread somewhere (maybe the original of this) someone was talking about 1 18v battery vs. 2 9volts...very interested if there's alternatives available!

Here's mine. A Kingston Heir 5 fretless. Active, ash body, ebonol fingerboard. Had original black hardware when I bought it. I've upgraded to the smoked chrome hardware to get the quick release bridge (the black bridge didn't have this feature). It's an '05. I really want to put in some Nordys and an OBP-3. Has anyone else done this, or does everyone use Barts as the pup upgrade?

Here's a question perfect for this thread:

Why the hell are the cavity covers so hard to get off? They fit perfectly, but it's impossible to remove to change the battery. I tried notching mine to be able to stick a knife in the side, but it looks like ass. Good thing I ordered replacements.

What do you guys do?
