Why the hell are the cavity covers so hard to get off? They fit perfectly, but it's impossible to remove to change the battery. I tried notching mine to be able to stick a knife in the side, but it looks like ass. Good thing I ordered replacements.

Yeh, that's one of the few cons of the Kingstons in my opinion...I use a small hex key (L shape) that seems to work...but I'll forget it at some point and need to do a quick change...that's why invested in lithium 9v, don't have to change as often!!!

I got to play a 535 this weekend at a conference held at our church and it was a religious experience!! (Thanks Aaron!) Outstanding B string...nice and clear and punchy. I didn't think twice about using it as I do on my KZ. Obviously a huge difference in $$ and such...but I can't afford a 535.

Would upgrading to Barts "fix" it or should I just sell everything I own for a 535? :help:

Yeah, does the B feel bad or sound bad? 99% of all MTDs ive played - Import or USA have incredible Bs. But, the standard KZ may not sound good. Its always good to upgrade electronics on an standard KZ. That may solve your problem.

It has a "dull" or "flat" sound to it. I just purchased a set of P2 Barts w/Bart pre that I'll be putting in next week. Pretty stoked about it and sure hope it fixes the "B" issue!!

Probably a silly question...but just to make sure...I'm getting ready to upgrade my KZ-5 and was looking at the knobs. There aren't any set screws on them so am I to assume that they are merely pushed onto the pot stems?

Yep, you can pull them off...I upgraded mine with the US style rubberized one, the first ZX came with and I wanted the other two to match!

Where did you get your rubberized Collette knobs? you can get them from Mike - send him a money order for $5 and he will send you some. If not best bass gear sells similar knobs. I like the way they feel vs. metal knobs.

yeh, that's where I got them from...had to pay a bit more to Canada...but worth it! When I get my fretless MTD Kingston Saratoga...oh, yeh!

It took some long hours since I haven't soldered in years, but the Bartolini pickups and preamp are in! It is a totally rocking bass with an awesome B! Nice and tight and focused sound! I've stayed away from playing an open B since I've had it but now I don't have to. I played it through my 2x10's at church in the Worship band today and it was killer!

To anybody that's not quite happy with the stock electronics, take the plunge and do it! It's well worth the time and expense!

Ha, finally found this part II. So I installed an OBP-3 in my Artist 5 and it sounds amazing but... I have to get rid of it. Pretty much as soon as I bought the pre my wife and I found out we were going to adopt a little baby (so don't feel too bad for me). Still in the club though; I'll never get rid of my Beast.

Okay, here's my baby. Got this in a trade from a fellow TBer several years ago. It's a late 90s Kingston 5-string (pre-Buzz Feiten) that's been modded as such:

- Bartolini 3-band pre (stacked bass/treble)
- Bartolini pickup (specially made and VERY hard to find)
- Hipshot tuners
- string trees
- Dunlop straplocks
- Removed pickguard, filled in holes, painted over them, then coated them with urethane
- Created my own neck heel cover

It's been around the block a lot of times, but it's in great shape overall. Growls like a mother! Could stand to have a new nut, though.

Thinking about selling it.

I know many of us have upgraded pups/electronics. Those of you whom have the stock artist (the newer one); here's an idea of how it sounds with Aggy OBP-3 with various settings. Honestly, I dig it more than any MM I've tried:

Long story short... I couldn't hear myself during the recording This was done so you have an idea of its versatility (not mine!) It's a similar riff done flat, boosted HiLo, boosted Mid, cut Mid, Mid Freq fully clockwise, Mid Freq full clockwise with boosted HiLo, Mid Freq full counter-clockwise, Mid Freq fully counter-clockwise with boosted HiLo.
