The Official MTD USA Thread

I know you're going to love that fretless. I have the same p'up configuration and while there might not be as much tonal variety via the blend pot, IMO, it yields a great tone. Tweaking the bass/treble/mids in combination with the blend pot does some special things.

Can you explain the woods? I think I see:

Mahogany body
Burl Redwood top(?)
Ebony board
Ash neck/Bubinga Stringers

WOW!!

Nice...

Actually, our basses are pretty similar. You nailed it on the specs. After playing for a few hours, I must say that I agree with your findings on the blend pot. Still a stunning bass with many tonal options. My pics don't do justice to the flamed ash neck. I believe you have a blackened redwood top, right? I really dig that look. In fact, I have a 535 on order with that top...and replacing the ash 635... Somebody please save me from myself...

Yeah...I had Mike move the magnetic p'up a little further up because I was afraid if it was closer to the piezo bridge that it would sound too nasally especially if both p'ups were running. However, I don't think that Mike's piezos are like any other I've heard (in a good way). The tones with that p'up soloed are very usable, unlike some other piezos I've tried. That said, since the piezo isn't nasally at all I think that the p'up could have been moved closer to the bridge and I still would have sounded good. I thought that blending toward the piezo would have given more or a bridge-like p'up tone, but more suited for fretless, if any of that makes sense.

You're right, though. Still a great bass with lots of great mwah. I put Thomastik flats on it and my bass playin' buddies were all amazed at how much mwah it still has even with the flats and not the rounds.

Your pics are great...if that bass looks any better in person then I might just pass out if I ever saw it. That Burl Redwood top looks like it's on fire in that sun. Totally mind blowing. (Wanna trade??:smug:...NO...I'm serious).

The blackened redwood top is really sweet. Looks killer in person. Sometimes pictures really DON'T do ANY of these basses justice!

I would be interested to hear your comments on how the ebony on ash/bubinga sounds. I've never heard that before and I'm thinking that on a fretless that must be something pretty magical.

Also, what are the specs on the 535 and 635 you're ordering? What else besides this fretless do you play right now?

I'm putting an order in for a 535 with an alder or ash body, maple neck, RW board, Maple burl top with a blueburst finish.

For the 635 I'm thinking of a walnut body....and I don't know what else.

I'll have to reserve my opinion on the ash/bubinga until I can play through a decent rig. Mike says that the laminate neck has a more compressed sound. He hasn't been wrong yet, but I just don't know yet. It sounds like heaven to me...

535:
Mahogony body/Maple Neck
24 fret Honduran rosewood board
Blackened OR water cured redwood top
Matching peghead veneer
Wenge/Purpleheart veneer between body & top
Matching control knobs...

I almost ordered this as a 735, but that's too crazy...even for me!:rollno:

635:
Ash body/Ash neck
Maple burl top
24 fret Rose of the Mountain board
Matching peghead veneer
Matching control knobs
Green burst finish

Mike may not have ROM with much red in it when my number comes up. If not, I'll go with BEM. In the meantime, I'm bangin on a Fender...:hiding:

...Blackened OR water cured redwood top...
Did Mike make this distinction or did you?

The reason I ask is because when I got my Marilyn, since it had a water cured redwood top, and since I wasn't sure what that meant, I did research on it. Water cured is essentially partially petrified, and the coloring is due to mineral deposits in the wood from the mineral rich water it sat in for so long. Blackened is more of a slang term that can mean anything from a genuine water cured piece to just a finishing process to any normal piece of wood or even damage from a forest fire.

Here's the thread where I originally commented on it... kinda' old but if you're interested...

Beautiful bass....I've always thought that an ash neck with a mahogany body would be a great combination. Very, very nice.

Thanks for the great information, Vic. I have learned from you. I am leaving the final decision up to Mike. I will be satisfied with whatever he creates. You answered some of my own questions.

Cool! :) I will tell you one thing, however, you are a SMART MAN for "trusting Mike" like that.

I've been ordering custom instruments for a few years now, and while it really hasn't been a super long time, I'm familiar with the whole wood spec'ing thing. Well, Mike and one other luthier are two folks that I totally and completely trust to tell ME what I want.

I can tell you this, too... if it had been up to me about a year or so ago, I never woulda' spec'd a bass with an ash neck neck, and choosing a maple board and walnut top might also not have been my first choice. Those are just some (albeit great) different woods than I'm most accustomed to. HOWEVER, I told Mike what I wanted from the instrument and he told me that's what I should have him build. I had to choke on an apple to give up total control like that, even with someone like Mike (you have to know me to know why that was so difficult, but it was :)) but with him, folks really need not worry. :)

In the end, he totally and completely nailed it. It's exactly what I wanted in every darned way, down to the last detail... tonally, aesthetically, and ergonomically. At least for me, it's an "MTD among MTD's" if that makes sense. I'm elated with it.

I was in Mike's shop when he was finishing this bass. He played it to make sure everything was in order and I could not believe how good it sounded. I told him that if I can save enough money I wanted one just like it. The pictures do not do this bass justice, it is incredibly beautiful in person. He played it through a Genz Benz and a German made pre-amp, the name escapes me, but it sounded incredible through both. He told me that he was making it for a guy in California who was with Gospel Chops. Congratulations. Virgil

Hey Tony,

How does your fretless MTD 635 sound like on the job? Do you have any soundclips or recordings of the bass? When do you use the piezo system? I'm curious to how it sounds like especially on a jazz setting. I want to compare the sound to my AC5. Different pickup placing but with the same piezo pickups. I'm very new to MTD since I just got mine a few weeks ago and I've never seen a fretless in action yet.

Norm is the man! I've played a bunch of MTD's and also sold a few and this bass is different and its killin!

Mike,

So that is Serial number #1250 listed on his website? Very cool. Hope he treated you fair on the price and didn't charge extra for the Norm Mojo, although it is probably worth a bit extra for that:). I thought I saw that listed somewhere but didn't persue it.

Hey Miko~

I think in a jazz setting this fretless would kill. I think that if you have the pre set flat and then you sweep the blend from the magnetic pickup to the piezo you don't hear that big of a difference. I think the magic happens when you favor one or the other a bit on the blend (or a lot on the blend) and then you tweak the eq's. I think it can cut if you're not afraid to use the mid controls.

I think you can get a nice bridge tone by favoring the piezo and backing off of the bass and boosting the treble. I also think there are upright tones in there if you favor the piezo, boost bass, back off mids a touch and change up your right hand technique.

Maybe I can swing by during the next Schroeder GTG and I will bring it by. If not then maybe I will swing by during one of your gigs and let you use it for a set.

Hey Tony,

Thanks for the input man! I'm thinking your bass sounds really huge esp with the magnetic pickup. Something like an Anthony Jackson sound but fretless! I really can't get the whole piezo thing on any kind of bass and I never play the piezo on my AC5. Its just not my sound.

Bring it to the next Schroeder GTG. We will try to make it happen on a Saturday like mid-morning mid-afternoon. Bring it with you so everyone can check it out.

Thanks!

Miko

The piezo on the F bass AC's never did appeal to me. Too "nasally" or harsh sometimes, IMO. That could just be me, though. This piezo on the MTD is very usable.

Hopefully I will see you at the next GTG.
