The Official MTD USA Thread

Hi Vic,
Yes I've heard about this but never saw these bassland (Bob Lee, right?) vids...
Could you post/repost the link or tell me where to find them please?
Thanks!
Yeah, except I think I got his vid confused with the TMTV ones...

Here's part 1 of 3 where he talks about it...

I received yesterday this real piece of art:

I'll try to do better pics when weather will be sunnier... the redwood burl looks like human flesh or muscle with the sunlight! I own 3 other MTDs and this one is the most impressive!
It sounds as good as it looks, I'm really happy with this one.

My goodness that is a beautiful instrument. Redwood burl FTW!

Hey guys, just thought I'd share this with you. A friend of mine shot a video with his digital camera at our last gig. It was that once in a blue moon gig where I decided to put down my Nordy and play my 535, so I thought I'd share it with you all.

MTD 535 - MB LMII - GK Neo 212

You can tell the video was shot with a digital camera. There's break up in the mic, the acoustics in the room were horrific, and the video is uselessly dark, but you can hear it, especially if your speakers are decent. Here's the bass in question (minus the adorable fluffy kitten).

Yep. Typical MTD formula.

I thought it sounded like wenge.

Vroom, that bass sounds great. Quick question. I don't know if you commented on this when I posted it a while back, but I can't get my slaps/pops to speak as well as they do in your clips. Do you think it's the fact that I'm only using a 210 cab, or do I need to alter some EQ?

Oh, my MTD is solid korina body with wenge neck/fb. If that helps.

Ooh, boy...good question, and definitely a loaded one. What you heard on my clip was everything flat on the amp, the tweeter turned down a bit ('10 o'clock' as opposed to 'Noon') on the cab, and everything except the 'bass' control flat on the bass...which was sitting at about 7/10. So....

For me, the tone is either in the bass or it isn't. I know that sounds kinda' black-or-white, but as the man himself said in that second of three videos linked above, the only variable in these basses is the wood. I know I've said this before in this thread, but prior to hearing both of the basses I now own, I spent 10 years just not digging the MTD sound. The ash/walnut/maple combo just really speaks to me.

That said, without knowing your EQ points, it'd be very unfair to suggest that you'd be unable to get a good slap tone, and that's certainly not my point. At the risk of offering an uninformed suggestion, if you start relatively flat, and then add some upper mids, you could be on the right path toward finding the slap tone you're after. The only concern at that point, is whether you like the overall sound from that boost. Kind of a tangent here, but using my Roscoe as an example, I can dial in a slap tone on that bass, but I can't stand it. In other words, altering the tone shape such that I can get the bass to cut through the mix while slapping changes the tone so much that everything I really like about the full sound of the instrument is masked.

I hope that helps, and doesn't confuse matters further. :)

It helps, but let me give a little more detail for you.

Through an Eden WT550/210XST setup with everything flat except the bass and treble on +1, I set the bass to a hair above center click towards the neck, treble and bass at about 5/10, maybe 6, and mids at center click boosted just a little. Now this gives me great tone, but it's just not really cutting the way I'd like it to. Some of the other helpful TBers suggested I need a bigger rig to push the sound a little more, but I like to get multiple ideas before I start selling stuff.:hmm:

Sterling Bass, thanks so much for the kind words!

DRay521, unless you're running out of headroom, I don't think you need a bigger rig to get the tone you're after. I have a 210 cab as well and don't have a problem getting the sound to cut...assuming the bass has the sound I'm after.

Based on what you've described, I'd be interested in your thoughts on setting the mid-switch to the upper (800hz) point, and then boosting just a wee bit more. That might give you the cut you're after, and if the bottom suffers at all you can add in just a wee bit more lows. Good luck...
