The Official MTD USA Thread

How do you tame this bass down, my MTD has so much mids and highs it's driving me crazy. Should I put flats on it. One problem is to much sustain.
Too much sustain? Wow, never heard that as a complaint before. I've always found it easy to control sustain when I have plenty... it's the lack of sustain from an instrument when you want it is a bigger problem IME.

I have to turn the treble and mid pot all the way down and the bass all the way up on the bass. On the amp I kill the mids.
Well, to be honest, dropping the treble control, even all the way, should not be a problem. I've done it before and it still sounds great, so while that might not be something you're used to, it's not necessarily a problem to do so.

However, dropping all your mids and boosting the bass so much does seem odd. I'm assuming you're dropping mids from the high mid setting. May I suggest boosting the bass a little less and boosting the low mids a touch to help fortify the low end? Maybe also try favoring (or even soling) the neck pickup.

Also, strings are a big component too, and they'll do a LOT more than just change brilliance at the high end. Move to nickel strings first and see where that goes. The D'Addario XL's seem to be super common, easy to find, cheap, and a well known quantity in the bass world. Just make sure to get the extra long scale version for the 35" scale.

See where this takes you and report back. :)

I picked out one his Walnut MTD's -- BUT he returned that one!
Yeah, but that was ONLY because the weight spec somehow got lost in the mix and it was kind of a beast compared to what I really need to be getting these days. Every other aspect, including aesthetics, feel, and tone, were all there! :)

Vic - I'm pretty sure I did your Marilyn though...?
Yep. In fact it was pretty well on the way to completion when you let me in on it, so I was like doubly lucky... one to get in on that bass, and two, because I didn't have to wait long before I got it compared to most orders... and of course it was exactly the way I woulda' ordered it anyway, so win-win. :)

Here's the one Joel spec'd out, which actually already had a buyer waiting by the time I decided to "try again"... clearly a superb instrument in EVERY way for someone who didn't mind a little extra weight (I think it was around 10 pounds)...

Here's the "sister" I spec'd out, with the only difference being lighter ash...

...and of course some white balance issues with the camera... oh well... maybe I'll fix them later. :)

Both basses are simply PHENOMENAL.

Thanks, did you ever try flats on your?

:D

My next MTD is up in three weeks. It's the anti-Vic bass (Wenge/Wenge on Myrtle/Tulipwood.) I know you hate that combo!

That is a very nice wood combo!

Wenge/Wenge with an Ash body is actually still my favorite MTD combo.
+1 all the way. This is my favorite MTD wood combo as well. Here are my two ash bodied MTDs with wenge/wenge necks:

I need some better solo shots of this 435...

I know that this 535 didn't really float Vic's personal boat, but it is just my absolute favorite.

Yeah, the whole wenge neck thing is really polarizing, which is why it's become kind of a running joke between Tom and I (just as dual volumes vs volume blend has.) I will say this, however, of all the wenge necked MTDs I've played, the ash bodied ones were my faves.

Don't forget the "playing over the bridge pickup versus playing over the neck pickup" thing. :D

That just gets into one of the specific reasons why between the two of us. There could be MANY reasons why someone would either like or dislike that neck. It's just a preference thing at the end of the day, as with so many things... especially with instruments as personalized as Mike's.

...except when I'm talking to you and Joel, anyway, in which case, you guys are just wrong... but someday you'll figure it out and flip those silly things for ash or maple necked MTDs... just a matter of time, is all... ;) :D :D

While there could be many reasons, the truth of the matter is that: A.) you are just wrong, and B.) your hands have tone from Bizarro World. :D

Ok, now you're just getting mean... however, since you're still already wrong for liking these necks, that makes your comment the reverse of the truth, which I'm ok with... ;) :D

(careful, we're dancing around Mikebass's camp here.) :D

Well, I finally picked up an MTD...

Wenge Neck / Black Limba Back / Burl top...

Cell phone pix FTW...

The case is pretty damn hardcore...

:hiding:

Ahh...the one in bass exchange! Cool ones!!! I had my eyes on it for sometimes until i decided to go with the BEM board instead of wenge. Love the black limba/wenge neck though! Its a very punchy combination for sure. Congrats and enjoy it!
Here's mine:
