Btw Tom I got this from Cameron Davies ....tradingbasses.com.....looks like it may be your old one....for a 14 year old bass it's in amazing shape!!!
Unless that bass was made special, that's not an oil finish. I think maybe some things changed recently due to product availability, but he used to use a "catalyzed polyurethane" finish. It was a very thin satin finish, so it kind of had the feel of wood/oil, but without the maintenance issues.Well it's still the same!....couple wear spots through the oil finish but nothing major at all.....hardly noticeable
Yeah, Mike is all about both the sound and feel of the wood. It's mainly why his instruments are so personal. Double-edged sword tho... the right one will be pure magic, but it may take you a few to get it "right".Ahhhhh thanks for the info!!! It is very thin
One of my students just bought a 635-24 from Jerry Burdick. Incredible. Focus, clarity, precise attack, less high-treble than my Marilyn, midrange for days, thick, goopey midrange, incredible. I'm gonna borrow a couple more MTD's from students, so I'll have five at the house here to compare. Video soon, and once and for all I intend to disprove the 'wood doesn't matter' nonsense...at east for people with hearing left....
Incredible bass...this one...

I think this is the best combination of woods for an MTD...the slap sound, just both pickups, NO EQ, is incredible, has this beautiful warm thick organic midrange, yet with a sharp attack. Gorgeous. I'm getting one. Clips soon.
And wait till you guys see the owner of this bass...this is going to blow your minds...
Cheers,
Cameron
Can't wait for your videos!

That's cool. I wasn't as taken with the ash/walnut/ash/maple combination as I'd hoped - but that impression is based on one individual 535. From what I can tell, there can be quite a bit of variation in the sound of the MTDs, even when the wood combination is the same.playing this thing some more today, it has such a profound depth and character to the sound, and a heavy, HEAVY low-mid thump/punch like I have never heard in my life, with a beautiful focussed top end snap to it...I can hear now why Mr. Tobias raves about this wood combination...I DO like it more than the wenge stuff I've heard...this thing's ridiculous.
It has a gravitas, a heaviness and weight to the sound like you would not believe...this has got to be the best bass I have ever heard in my life! And I thought the Marilyn was good....man, this is something else! I've played a lot of basses in my time, and a little over a dozen MTD's, but this thing is about as good as it gets.
Videos soon...incredible....
Cheers,
Cameron
Definitely. "individual" is the key word with all of Mike's work IMHO... and yes, even within the same wood combo, but at the same time, there should still also be a lot of tonal consistency within the same wood class too. That's cool. Holy Schnitzel. I could grow to love that. What's it weigh?

his basses sound quite a bit different several years in...the top end sweetens and lessens in intensity, the bottom end blossoms and gets punchier...people buy one, play it for three months, and sell it LONG before the bass is even broken in...it's just crazy...
This one, for example, has not opened up yet. It's going to get NOTHING but better.
All of his basses are slightly different, but they are all unmistakably from the hands of the master. This is the best electric bass I have ever played, period. The electric bass 'perfected'.
I just can't believe people 'sell' instruments like this...what, you've got something that goes deeper, is punchier, crisper, brighter, more balls, plays easier, better ergonomics...? I'm sorry, but such a thing doesn't exist...
Too much bass for them to handle, I guess. Crazy...
Cheers,
Cameron
