The Official MTD USA Thread

Thanks for the info Tom! Is the case very different from the TKL ones? If you have time I want to see some pics of the new case, if you have any pics of it.

The TKL ones are too 'bulky' for me, I only use them to keep the bass at home, that's why I opted for the Gigbag.

Here are some pics:

This case is a bit on the heavy side, but I like the look and feel.

Ameritage cases are great. I've never had one of their bass cases but I did have one of their acoustic guitar cases. They are built like tanks. Heavy, yes...But, that is what you deal with if you want the added protection. For my day to day uses...Like others, I use gig bags. But, I always have a hard case or two hanging around in case I need to do some heavy duty traveling.

Just want to give a shout out to Michael Tobias, called him up today, he answers the call, talks to me for a while about my instrument and a few questions I had. Great guy.

Took my 435 to a recording session yesterday for kind of a New Orleans blues/swampy thing. Ran my 435 through an old old Fender Bassman, the 435 sounded fatter than an old P bass. Love it.

It really bugs me sometimes when people insist on my using a Fender when I know that I can get just as appropriate a sound with my MTDs. Now, again, some of the MTDs I've owned weren't as capable of copping a "vintage" tone, but my two main 535s are. Some folks just can't get away from listening with their eyes... :scowl:

I dunno, man. Your Fender's pretty nice, too. If I had your bass collection, I'd have a hard time making it to gigs on time for trying to decide which delectable axe to bring.

I actually gigged the Fender last night, as it was a folk-pop gig and the Fender + flats sound worked perfectly. I also didn't need a B string. But most of my gigs these days require that B string so the selection process usually isn't too difficult! :D

A folk-pop gig? Sounds right up my alley. I gotta get a second gig going. Uh, partly so I can catch up to you on the sweet bass front...

Speaking of Marylins...

Anybody here have an experience playing/owning an Ash Bodied Marylin? Very curious....
Technically, that wouldn't be a Marilyn, but I think the term has been diluted over time. It used to be a pretty specific spec of a chambered alder body with a blackened redwood top, and a maple neck with ebony board. Just FWIW if it's of any interest.

Hi Vic...

My friend has a chambered Makore-Redwood top, maple-ebony neck, and Mike wrote Marilyn #xx on the headstock, so I guess now Mike's naming every chambered body MTDs a 'Marilyn'? I never ask Mike bout this.

Anyways, it's the sound that I'm curious about, I was very close from ordering a Chambered Walnut body, but Mike only made one of those more than a decade ago, so he forgot what is sounds like. I already took a 'risk' by having Bubinga board (that's now an option for an MTD), so I'm not going for Chambered body yet...

Yeah, it's become pretty much any chambered bass now, I guess.

Generally speaking, IME, the chambers don't do much at low volume, but in live/loud situations it added an acoustic element to the tone that gave a bit more of a grand piano character to the already crystal clear tone of the MTD. Pretty cool, really.

I've been looking high and low for a used or new in stock 434-24. I know there's not a lot out there but I can't find even one.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new 434-24 but was wondering if anyone knows about either a used or new in stock 434-24 out there somewhere.

Can't say as I do. 434s are rare enough but a 434-24 is very rare. I don't know that I have ever seen one. Send mike an email. He might be able to tell you if he has made one recently and what dealer may still have it. But my guess is that a 434-24 would be a custom customer order rather than a stock order for any store. So chances are if he made one...it was going directly to someone.

Glenn at Link Removed used to have one but its no longer in the list. Just got sold, I guess. You can ask Glenn if he can find one for you. Ultimately, what matters will be the wood combination for the tone you prefer.
