The Official MTD USA Thread

Wanted the "Club" to be the first to know. Been e-mailing Mike T on a possible new build (534 Alder Body, Walnut Top, Maple Neck w/Honduran Board). However, I will need to sell my existing 534 - Ash Body, Walnut Top, Maple Neck & FB to come up with the scratch for it. Soooooo, it saddens me to have to put my baby up for sale :bawl:. I attached pics on the first page. Hands down the best bass i've owned but like many here, i'd like to try another MTD w/different wood combo. Bass is amazing with an articulate, deep clear tone. At this time, i'd like to try a "warmer" sounding MTD and Mike tells me this combo we have been discussing should fit the bill. Bass is DEAD MINT and was delivered to me last Christmas. PM me for any Q's and should be up on the classifieds by tonight. Cheers!

All this talk of new MTDs. I pulled the trigger and ordered another one today!

Saratoga 5
Poplar Body w/Cottonwood Burl top
Matching trussrod cover and headstock
Maple neck and birdseye board.

Now the long wait. It will be into 2014 sometime before I see it! :(

Sounds like a great build! The Saratoga's are really nice. Definitely more than meets the eye at first glance.

Absolutely, I actually had one with basically the same build spec without a top. It had a poplar body and blueburst top. The color was just not my thing and I sold it. It was a killer bass for sure. So, I've been talking to Mike for a while now on how to get the same sound out of a bass that fits more of my aesthetic wants. He told me that Cottonwood is really poplar. So, it will essentially give me the tone of a solid poplar body but with a really nice top. :hyper:

That makes sense.

Guys to be honest a 33" scale mtd... 34" I can relate to and I can see for some people 35" isn't as comfortable. But I really feel that if you want an mtd you want a certain sound, and there is a reason that Mike makes these basses at that scale.
A 33" mtd will sound very different I even find the 34" versions sound different then the 35" ones, not saying one is better then the other, but to me that distinctieve tone comes from a longer scale bass. Perhaps I'm a bit more conventional, but think about that for a minute...

This comming from Hou if you want to stick to Garrisson type of solo bass playing I'm convinced you should look at Fodera for 33" scale basses, but then again you already have that I believe.

Anyone here know if Tobias would do 33 scale? And tighter than 18 mm spacing at the bridge?

I asked him about doing a 33" five or six string a couple of months ago.

He said that he's had enough requests lately that he'd do it. But he mentioned it'd take time to get the correct "templates" made. It wouldn't be till sometime next year.

This was his reply a couple of months ago. I'd email now to see if his position has changed.
