The Official MTD USA Thread

To all ..

I am not looking to be a troll or cause a problem. But this is the MTD thread so I figure that goes for both the good and bad. The bass store I bought the bass from said he might of been having a bad day. But as a customer who just dropped 6000 dollars on a bass, waited for MT to call me and wound up fixing the problem myself when MT blamed the bass store I just don't get it.. I've met Mike myself, and in person never had this kind of problem. So to label me as a troll or anything else is not fair to me. I'm not trying to drag the bass store into this so please don't ask.

Thanks
Bill

I'll agree with the others on this - Mike Tobias had always been nothing short of amazing when working with him. Even years before I ordered a new MTD. Way back in the day I had a Gibson built Tobias and he helped me out with that even though he had no connection to those basses whatsoever. When I bought a used MTD and talked to him, he treated me just like I had bought it straight from him. And the process of ordering a custom was excellent- he always gave quick responses to emails and was very helpful over the phone.

Who knows how alexgeddy came across to Mike. The Mike I've dealt with on numerous occasions has been very gracious and helpful - a real standup guy. His good service is part of the reason I have been a loyal customer for the past several years. Having said that, Mike can be very dry sounding and he strikes me as someone who doesn't have the patience for a lot of BS. Maybe he was having an off day, or maybe alexgeddy's approach with Mike just rubbed him the wrong way. We can't know for sure. I can say that this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything negative about dealing with Mike.

I am going to have to make a point of hunting you down! We (Dragon Wagon) play in NW Ohio a lot! Have a great weekend!Link Removed

I second everyone backing Mike. Even when you ask about buying a used bass he's always so informative, patient, and polite even though his work load is off the charts. Now, he may have been a bad day, but you could also objectively examine how you approached him and what your tone was like. This is something we've never heard of before. There was a guy who REALLY was pushing Mike's buttons for DAYS (wont say who) but he took it ALL and worked it out with him.

Btw, you never said what the problem was and how the dialogue went. I think that would help us better judge the situation.

Good morning all. I will soon be joining the USA club! I have a 635-24 that's almost complete, which I will be picking up at Summer NAMM in July. The wood combo is poplar/myrtle burl/wenge/wenge, with standard electronics, and matching wood knobs. I'm so stoked to be joining the MTD family!

The bass will look like this one if anyone's interested (with another string added of course): [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I was reading on a post a couple of pages back, about the strings that Mike uses. My 6 month bass came with the light yellow/Green silk wrap , I really like them but as I read those could had being Dean Markley, is that true can some one know what type DM are they? I really like them.

Just so all of u know that are bashing me ,, when I talked to MT I tried to wish him a happy memorial day nd he hung up the phone. So don't be too quick to judge .. especially when the retailer I dealt with said that he can be difficult to deal with...
Well there you go - everyone knows Mike hates Memorial Day wishes. Don't ever try to wish him a happy Memorial Day. Come to think of it (and this is not directed at you alexgeddy), isn't it kind of weird to wish someone a "happy" Memorial Day?

Thanks for the Info, its funny because I have being looking for a good set of strings for sometime now for my MTD. I thought I had the perfect set with the Sadowsky BL, but it was missing something, yesterday I decided to install the original strings that came with the bass and incredibly there are perfect set and I didn't even know it. It brought the sound of the bass back to live, I love this SS MTD strings.

None of use were bashing you - we were simply giving our experiences with Mike. Your experience with him sounds like a bad one, but there are also hundreds and hundreds (actually thousands going back to the pre-Gibson Tobias years) of great experiences out there.

Something doesn't sound right. It's not that you just caught him on a "bad day" because it sounds like your experience with him wasn't just on one day, but a repeatedly negative experience. You've also left out details that would flesh out the story more - specifically who the dealer is and what the actual problem was. If there was a situation this bad and involved one of his dealers, then that dealer would probably feel the same way about it as you and the story could be easily either verified or at least given more perspective.

So without us knowing the whole story (or really any of the story) all we can do is give our perspective from our interactions with Mike. He's always been great to me - top notch customer service.

So here lately, I've been thinking of selling my 435. I can't believe I've been toying with this idea. Then I'll play it, and smack myself. I don't get it! This instrument is so freaking amazing and I've never, ever played anything so well made and so easy to play.

Does anyone ever go through this?

Sell it for what...?.. To pay debt..?...I would if I had to I suppose..
To fund continued explorations into other basses...?...Not likely... The only bass I'd consider giving mine up for is a Smith White Tiger and that's a kind of a rare find now....Sell it because I don't like the sound...,?..Absolutely not...I just put it away for a bit and pick up something else that speaks to me when I need something different....
