The Official MTD USA Thread

Oh, I love it! It has definitely become my go-to MTD, and it's one of the basses I am using the most for a reference when reviewing gear.

Tom, that bass (particularly the neck) is just insanely awesome! You've got an extremely special bass-build there...:-)

Thank you! I definitely feel that way, too. I have been fortunate to own a number of Mike's basses over the years, and this one really stands out. I am so happy with this bass!!! :hyper:

I know this was discussed recently, and I went back a few pages to review, but I'm in the market for a new bag and wondered what my fellow MTD owners think of the MONO Vertigo. I've heard that the bottom strap pin placement is off in terms of the bottom shock cushion. Just looking for some input before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

I own a vertigo and I use it to store my MTD without any issues. the strap button doesn't even come to mind. the gig blade, the Vertigo, the m80, and the continental are all solid choices

Yep this thread is definitely open to anyone, but if you have any specific Kingston questions (swapping electronics, hardware or other mods are popular with some of those) your best bet is that club thread...here's a link from a search.

But man I'd love to hear clips of that Kinsgston AG6 if you get a chance - I've heard a couple but it's nice to have a frame of reference from multiple players. I may want to get an AG5 at some point...

Thanks @vision I'll take a look at that thread as well. I am doing some writing and studio work with a local folk writer guitar player singer and just finished the bass for one of our new songs, but the drum parts aren't finished yet and it is still pretty raw, but the bass sounds phenomenal! I had a little bit of a time getting used to how it plays because it is so responsive. You almost don't have to touch it to get a great sound out of it. As soon as I get a good working copy of the song I'll post it here. :)

I have a tick that adds a lot of space to the Vertigo, but I prefer leaving it off and using my GruvGear club bag to carry everything

That Club Bag looks cool - what is the benefit of it vs a regular backpack though? Are there compartments that are specifically configured for musicians in some way?

The custom preamp with tone control was an added $100 to the list price (which means it was actually less, but he didn't itemize the street price discount on my invoice).

It's actually $100 Nett price. That's how much Bartolini is charging to make a custom set. It used to be free, as I'm the only one that request for it at the beginning, but after my second Bass, which has the same configuration, Bartolini gave the upcharge for some reason.

Gotcha, yeah I wasn't sure on it since Mike doesn't itemize the discount. I knew some items like the wood knobs and I guess that preamp upgrade weren't discounted.

Well worth it for the options it adds in tone!!!

Hey Guys, I was wondering if anybody has a schematic that shows the knobs and what function each one performs. I have the Kingston AG but it has the same standard 5 knob configuration with the one that pulls out. I am just not famliar with what each one does. I looked on the MTD websites but nothing. Tried to search here, but not even sure what to call this. LOL

Thanks!

I'm sure Mike wouldn't mind sending you a schematic for the wiring (or directing you to where you can find one). Just email him.

The standard USA MTD preamp doesn't have a push/pull knob. If the Kingston AG has a push/pull I'm assuming that it's the middle knob of the top row of 3, is that right? If so, those controls should be treble, mid (push/pull to select mid frequency), and bass. Then the bottom two knobs would be volume and pan.

I got a rough mix from my first session with the new 535. This is a private Soundcloud link because the song obviously isn't out yet. There's a rough mix on everything else and the engineer just bounced a file that also had my bass on it, which is why the bass sounds separate from everything else. I had my EQ set flat with the passive tone rolled back around 75% to get a more traditional, warm tone. He mixed two of my takes and the punch points haven't been smoothed out yet on the bass track so you can hear where they are.

Wow, that passive tone makes the MTD sound much more palatable to me. Love it.

Yep, it really makes it more versatile because rolling that passive tone back is completely different from cutting the active treble. Gives you a good traditional time while still being able to roll it back up any time you want classic MTD tone.

I tried an MTD in a shop in Tokyo last year. It felt great, but the sound was so bright it was unreal. I couldn't even begin to dial it out. Can't remember the woods, which I'm sure was part of what was going on. I think maybe the ash/ash/maple combo. I couldn't stand it. It turned me off immediately. However, I have played one in the past with a wenge neck (no idea of the body wood....it was a 17mm spaced bass) and it sounded killer. Not nearly as bright as the other. I'm sure with a warmer body wood and that passive tone control an MTD would be much warmer and useful to someone like myself. It's a great option for them to offer for sure.

Some MTDs are very bright and some are not - it really depends on the individual bass. I much prefer MTDs that fall on the warmer end of the spectrum and sound a little more "traditional".
