The Official MTD USA Thread

Hey guys, I just purchased a Kingston AG6 and was told on another thread that either I could join in on this thread or that there was another non-USA MTD thread that I could join, but after looking through 40 pages of threads I could not find a non-USA MTD thread. Is this thread closed to Kingston owners?

I wouldn't say so... Anyone can jump in the discussion... I just don't know how much help we can be to you in terms of suggestions you might need and questions you might have because all of us here may not have any real experience with Kingstons...I'm sure some of us do... I had an AG5 Kingston for a short time... Not a bad bass at all...but the thread is definitely there... Trying typing MTD non USA in the search engine... I did and it popped up a bit down the first page...

Yep this thread is definitely open to anyone, but if you have any specific Kingston questions (swapping electronics, hardware or other mods are popular with some of those) your best bet is that club thread...here's a link from a search.

But man I'd love to hear clips of that Kinsgston AG6 if you get a chance - I've heard a couple but it's nice to have a frame of reference from multiple players. I may want to get an AG5 at some point...

Where is everyone keeping the internal gain setting on your MTD preamps? I still have mine in the lowest position which is how Mike sent it from the shop, but I know some players adjust that setting.

On my previous MTD, which I wanted more of a vintage tone, I had it all the way down. With my current one, which I want more modern sounding, I have it up to 50%.

Those are pretty rare, man...might have to google some spots....but guys, its page 75 so if I could, could all members please repost pics and specs as if we were opening a new thread...?..maybe you can say something about the bass like why you chose the specs that it has...I figured it would be a great point of reference for future owners to have that's updated...thanks guys...

In honour of page 75... This is my latest MTD. I think the Saratogas are a great design and I'd been in the market for one for a few months. When I played this one it just spoke to me in a special way.

Guess I'd better jump in too..,I owned an MTD years ago and knew it was the best bass I ever owned...my only issue was that it was a bit thin sounding...it drove me crazy until I finally gave up on it...I spoke to Mike about what kind of sound I was looking for shortly before selling the bass..he told me that mahogany and wenge would pretty much nail what I was looking for...seven years later, the stars lined back up and I landed this in the classifieds...

What's the best place to order a U.S. MTD bass...for metal?

I ordered mine directly from Mike. But there are definitely some advantages to ordering from a dealer - they may have some already on order so the build time may not be as long. You also have a contact you can reach at any time (you can usually reach Mike or Dan at the shop but they may not be available if it's close to something like NAMM or if they are just really busy). A dealer can also give you another point of view on wood selection.

Glenn at Austin Bass Traders is great. There are plenty of options though - Bass Chicago, Bass Central, etc.

Here's my page 75 pics...since I just posted when I got this bass I'll post a couple pics that are new here. I took the ramp off for now - while the ramp definitely allows me to play way faster it also restricts some of the dynamics that come from my fingers in terms of digging in to get tonal differences.

I'm REALLY loving the tone I'm getting from this bass. Same general bright and aggressive tonal family as the wenge/wenge MTD I had years ago, but this one is more even across the frequency spectrum. It is also VERY responsive to tonal variations from using my hands. On Sunday night I played a gig with a singer/songwriter acoustic guitar player and a percussionist with congas, and the MTD sounded absolutely beautiful. So sensitive to how I used my hands, it really felt like controlling a singing voice. The upper register was just amazing - on some of the quieter moments I played some upper register stuff that basically sounded like a background singer to his vocals. Just beautiful. Funny because a few hours before that I was playing gospel with basically a full funk band and it was slamming in that environment as well.

Here's the specs - ash/ash/roasted birdseye maple/red narra. Custom version of the MTD/Bartolini preamp with passive tone added along with push/pull mids.
