I always loved the look of that bass, Vic - and you have to do this when the Canadian dollar is in the tank?!The day you all thought would probably never come...
I'm going to be selling my MTD 535. It's a rare light ash body model. I'll get pics up later in a forsale post, but the short version is, it's under 9lbs, ash body/neck, birdseye board, figured walnut top, world logo, custom wood knobs. It also currently has the new super-switch system in it, so the pickups can be switched from single/double, active/passive mode, and dual band mids. The full original pickups/elex also come with. I probably posted some pics of it a while back, but will post new ones. I haven't decided on a price yet, but it's in mint condition (the reason I'm selling it... it needs to be played, and I'm not playing it... I've changed my lineup to go in a different, more traditional direction... still includes USA MTD tho of course.)
lol, sorry bro. I'll definitely treat the buyer right on this bass, but I'm not going to fire sale it. Mike and I are close friends and this bass was a special project... took a long time to get the woods selected. He's super particular about ash, and it's damn hard to find light ash that meets his tonal standards. Damn hard.I always loved the look of that bass, Vic - and you have to do this when the Canadian dollar is in the tank?!![]()
thank you!!Vic, your band demo is killer. Excellent tone and mix all the way around. Very solid band, groove, and vocals - and that singer just nails it...
Talk to Glenn at Austin Bass Traders, he has Mike's ear, and ultimately Glenn or Mike is your best answer.Hi folks, after a lot of hard work and saving up the dough, I'm looking into my first MTD and figured I'd get some advice from the experts. I have my eye on a nice used 535, with a spec of black limba body, figured florida rosewood (rose of the mountain) top, wenge neck and board. Has anyone had exp with similar spec MTD's or florida rosewood tops in general?
I know it's a tricky situation with mike's basses as each one imparts different tonal responses and properties depending on the wood combo used, and I'm looking for something that provides solid and warm lows, with growly mid's and a sweet treble for harmonics. I'm guessing the bass I'm looking at might fit the bill. I know mike is a busy man, but given he is a master of his craft, is it worth contacting him and asking about the tonal attributes of this combo? Or is that something that from experience, he affords to buyers of new MTD's.
If anyone has a better combo, or advice in general for the tone I'm after etc, feel free to throw that down too. I'm all ears
Cheers.

Unfortunately, no wood combination is 100% predictable in tone. Theoretically, certain combinations "should" yield certain results but that doesn't always work out.I wrote an email to Mike about the MTD USA AG5 I had in mind and he personally, promptly replied to me the next day without delay. He told me the reason why this was a 2012 model and told me the build of the AG series. He assured me that the AG5 I asked about was a FINE specimen and I could not go wrong.
I understand that Mike does not make a lot of Andrew Gouche models but he remembered the one I was talking about. Mike might remember that model if you give him the serial number. Even if he does not remember the exact one, from all the great things I hear about him, I am 100% sure he will be able to tell you the tone of the bass just from the wood combination. Just write to him and ask. Cant go wrong.
I'm waiting on delivery of this beauty. Super5 Look like she is going to pack a punch with this pickup configuration.
