The Official MTD USA Thread

Super cool. I always saw Daniel describe black limba bodied MTD with "fat" or "thick" sounding in his IG. Why did you opt for the mid cut frequency change?

The bands and my playing styles call for those frequencies. And the super 5 electronics are designed to only handle two freq not 3 like the 535 electronics. So it was an easy decision. Because I never use the 800hz it’s too honkey for me. I never ever slap. But l like the ability to have a switch that makes me forward or sit back and fill out in the mix.

The "smoothest" sounding 535 I owned had a beautiful black limba body and a wenge neck. I'm not sure how much was the body and how much was the neck but black limba would definitely be on my short list of body woods if I was to order a new 535.

I'm loving the increased activity in this thread! mtd4lyfe...

I agree. What I would really like to see is a show your MTD off Page. There are so many beautiful combinations and having somewhere to drool over them all would be nice.

If you guys are cool here is a spin off for just showing off your basses and we can leave this page for the informative type stuff?

Well, there was this thread:

Tom, do you happen to have a picture.......specifically of the laminate neck?

Here you go.

Do people recommend magnetic covers $300 upgrade? How easily removed are they?

I did it :D I felt like I almost had to talk Dan into it, didn't seem like something they've done a lot. I also don't know if this is normal for that option, but I'm getting little routes made in the truss rod cavity for the wrenches to live in, too :)

I retrofitted neo magnets in my own (non-factory magnetic) truss and battery covers, and it's awesome. That's why I went this way for the new build.

The top on that bass warrants a repost. :)

Happy to oblige!

I spent more time (over the course of years!) talking with Mike about this build than I have for any other custom bass I have owned. We discussed every aspect of tone woods, laminations, wood combinations, etc. ad nauseum, and I have to say, it was totally worth it. For my preferences, this is the clearly and notably the best MTD I have played.

I've always loved the look of that bass. Makes me think of a Lawren Harris painting.

That is beautiful. Do you happen to know what kind of upcharge it is for a neck like that?

I do not recall, sorry. I do know that I had seen a flamed ash neck and asked Mike if he had any more (and for a long time, he did not). When he did get some in, and we were talking about necks and laminations, he suggested wenge as a good wood to use. Well, I happened to know that Pete Skjold had sent Mike some "white wenge" (which Mike used in a killer fretless he built for Pete), and I knew he had some left over, so we ended up using that in my neck.
