The Official MTD USA Thread

Hey guys, any love for older 535s? I have had several 535s, both new and older ones but I love the older models much more than the new ones. Much more balanced overall sound, better low mids, cuts better through mixes. The older ones had different headstock, different bridge and tuners and of course - these super sounding active pickups! I am always surprised how well the older models play and sound.

My MTD is complete! The latest bass on MTD’s Instagram is mine :)

534-24
Ash body, Maple Burl top in dark Teal burst
Maple neck, Pau Ferro fingerboard
17mm string spacing
MTD proprietary Bartolini electronics with added Passive tone control
Luminlay offset fret markers

Just saw that bass on Facebook and thought, "Wow, what a great looking MTD". :)

I never noticed a difference in the headstocks, tuners or bridges of my older MTD vs the newer ones. Maybe my old MTD isn't old enough (though it did have the older electronics and had a white/translucent nut).

I've seen some of the old Eclipse basses that Mike built before settling on the moniker we know and love today, MTD. They were definitely sonically different from the ones we hear today, killer basses! Rather than pitting them against each other to see which era was better, I appreciate their differences and want to highlight how Mike and now Daniel have evolved their instruments to what they are now. It's always nice to see luthiers always learning and improving their crafts for us to enjoy. No names, but I've observed some high end luthiers have had very little improvement on their designs and methods for decades, even with some glaring issues. I guess if it sells...

The TB member stating his opinion doesn't mean that he is pitting the basses
built by Mike against each other.

I just played my '95 535 through my home rig (Acoustic Image Focus head + Epifani NYC T112 cabinet) - wow, just wow! No other bass I have had didn't/doesn't add that something extra to your finger touch. It's like an electric bicycle that adds the hard-to-notice but clearly felt power to your pedal. Pure MTD Heaven!
PS! There's good news also for Sadowsky fans - there are Sadowsky Blue Label SS strings on my 535 that compliment the great work from Mike! ;)

I can speak personally for one of those that you are talking about - wish I had #28 back :D
