The Official MTD USA Thread

I just love that top! I know what I want my next 4-string to be. Remind me; what preamp and EQ?
Thanks! I went to the shop to pick out my woods and when Mike pulled that one out I said, "you can stop there". The center is so striking and then there is flaming all around the outside.

Bartolini B-Axis, 3-band, active/passive switch, push/pull mids, tone control works passive and active.

Yeah, the tone is anyone’s guess but my ash/ash/maple 535 definitely had more “grind” to the sound than my other MTDs. I also found that, unlike any of my other MTDs, the note fundamental would tend to get buried in the mix. But, again, that was my experience with one bass in that wood combo. You never really know until you try the bass itself.
Really interesting to hear this. Of course no 2 MTD's are alike, even identical wood builds. My ash/ash/maple bass has lows for days, almost to the point of making the bass knob useless for boosting lol. The surprising thing for me was how sweet the treble is. I expected the bass to have alot more bite to the note, but the treble is actually very sweet and round.

Bad news MTD fans, I shipped a 535-24 via FedEx last week and it never made it to its final destination. Last scan was in Saint Petersburg, FL over a week ago.

Good news is I had full insurance on the package, and FedEx is processing that without contest. Really bad news is, it's the one and only Holly top bass Mike has ever built. Please keep your eyes and ears open for this bass, its just too unique to not show up somewhere.

I have attached some photos to help with identifying it. I have also posted this in the lost and stolen page, but I know the members on this group are just as rabid as I am about everything MTD and hope you can give me some help with this.

Thanks Alex

Man that is awful! No shortage of pawn shops in that area, you could be on the phone all day.

How does shipping insurance work in this situation? Are you (the seller) and the buyer both compensated?

In this case I get compensated and then I send the funds back to the buyer.

I just really can't believe that FedEx gave up so quickly looking for it. It's just too unique for it not to pop up somewhere.

So then you're out the money and the bass?

The only way it doesn't pop up is if the thief is a bass player who isn't dumb enough to post it online.

No, I am made whole. I have the buyers funds as of now.
FedEx sends me a check and then I return the buyers funds back to the buyer.

If he/she is stupid enough to leave the or post it online I get in my truck and head to Florida myself.

Isn't there a nation wide database of stolen items that pawn shops are supposed to check against? Maybe I'm dreaming that up.

I would like to think so. But I haven’t found it yet.

In the meantime I reached out to Beaver of Bass Central. He’s got people all over Florida keeping an eye out.

Figers crossed. I just spoke with someone at the FedEx depot down there and says there is a place where packages go when there tags fall off. Maybe it’s there. I’ll find out tomorrow.

Still, the holly-topped one you sold is one of a kind, and I feel bad for the buyer not getting to experience such a cool instrument...

I’m beyond disappointed that it went missing. I had FedEx open a new investigation today after I informed them that I have reported this to the local officials. They tell me they will search for the next two months. But in the meantime they are sending me the insurance claim.

Is that what you’re using on the video of “Brighter Day”? Just saw it now and that bass has a really deep and punchy low end (though still tight and clear). Great playing by the way!

Last month the same thing happened to me with FedEx... I was the buyer in that case, and they looked for the lost instrument for about 10 days before deciding to refund us. I find it surprising it happens so much (I guess they end up passing the cost down to customers with the insurance fees, so they don't care all that much).

Bummer man. After hearing how often this happens I am reluctant to ever ship a bass again.
