The Official MTD USA Thread

My lightest 535 was probably around 9.2 pounds (I specifically requested light ash)
Mine is mahogany/myrtle and weighs the same. You can generalize somewhat about weight, but I think it's really dependent on the specific pieces of wood used because there's so much variation.

If you're doing a custom build, and you have a weight range and wood combo in mind, you can probably achieve that as long as you're up front about your goals. (i.e. don't leave it to chance based upon wood types alone; let them know where you want this to end up weight-wise.)

About what, the price? The look? Nice looking for sure. I didn’t have great luck with that wood combo (ash body, ash neck, maple fretboard) but some people have. I’d have to know how much it weighed. Price-wise I would be inlined to give an offer, though the asking price is not out of line with what I’ve seen here (though some of the asking prices for MTDs on TB can get a little silly in my opinion). Also, is there a case included? If so what kind?

Yeah, it can be hit or miss. I had a 635 and a 535 at the same time with those woods. The 635 was super sweet, and the 535 was really snarly and aggressive. It was surprising to me how different they were.

Beautiful! Especially the top. Sometimes I miss having a six.

Thanks. Michael and I have been discussing lighter-weight options with the various woods. I was just looking for a benchmark range based on user experience. I appreciate it.

Tone (from the woods), and price.
I have some ash-bodied basses and they all have very vintagey mids, I'm not sure how I would like that on an MTD.
I've never had the opportunity to play an ash neck so no idea there.

The look is killer (imho anyway), weight and case can be asked (length too, I've seen some 634s around, I like 35" better).
Price, well I've seen better but it looks mint and it's a 6, I don't think it can be lowered much.
Although with this cojona thing some people are getting desperate and sell real jewels, but I'm not one to try and take advantage of that.

Yeah, the tone is anyone’s guess but my ash/ash/maple 535 definitely had more “grind” to the sound than my other MTDs. I also found that, unlike any of my other MTDs, the note fundamental would tend to get buried in the mix. But, again, that was my experience with one bass in that wood combo. You never really know until you try the bass itself.

Grind is good.
Getting buried is not :)

Anyone have any issues with neck stability when using ebony fretboard? Been reading that it can be an issue for some basses..

If you’re talking about ebony on an MTD I would have zero concerns. I have heard that ebony on an ash neck may sound harsh but that is not something that I have heard firsthand.

As far as other basses go there are so many ebony boards on so many basses I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

The ebony board on my 534 is rock solid. I would spec that again in a heartbeat.

Regarding some recent posts discussing weight: I had requested “lightweight” ash from Mike as part of the build. The bass came in at 9 pounds, 10 oz, making it one of my heaviest basses. That took me a while to come to terms with. I think Mike prefers the acoustic behavior of somewhat heavier woods, since most of my previous pre-Nashville Tobias bass guitars were somewhat weighty.

There is a trade off in the weight equation, whereby denser / heavier bodies tend to have a bit less air in their character and a much more solid fundamental; which plays well for slapped tones. This bass is no exception. It has become nearly my favorite all round instrument; and I am reaching for it more and more. I believe I am bewitched.

I think I know what you're talking about. Some years ago I was talking to Mike about some lots of ebony that were being sold and misrepresented as cured when they were really too green to work with. I don't think Mike ended up with any of it, or at least using it before it was fully cured, but it's possible some builders did. I believe this was about the time when the pure black ebony was starting to get really scarce. If you haven't seen the video by Bob Taylor about ebony, it's an excellent view.

Yea I think the posts I read might have been a couple of years old. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this issue recently. But good to know that it could have been just an issue with a particular batch of woods.
