The Official MTD USA Thread

So what do you think now that you've had a whole day with it?
1/2 day and it’s heavy for me but I’m going to love learning a 6 string. It’s not anything like I have and it is fully aggressive for sure. I’m going to enjoy this a lot!

That weight is perfectly acceptable for a 6 - I've had up to 13 lbs for sixers! But my identical 6 weighs almost a pound less - I got lucky

Oh yeah, none of my other basses are over 9. It’s fine as a 6, I’m just not used to it and it’s something I need to get accustomed to.

My 635 was in that weight range. You will indeed get accustomed to it, and pretty quickly, IIRC. The ash neck is also a nice change from maple. I remember that it felt so natural and organic when I played it.

Question for you guys. Are any of you the owner of this bass? I had been watching it for a few months on Reverb and noticed that it was sold recently, so I'm just curious.

“Sorry, I’m busy that night - I’ll be changing the strings on my bass”. :woot:

I’m not the owner, but I was also Watching the item. Beautiful instrument. I’m not deterred by the 8-strings. I’m very comfortable with my 6-strings and I have one Conklin BDGT-7. I would give the 8-string a shot.

Truth be told, way down my wishlist, is a Conklin New Century Sidewinder 9-String finished in white.

Just an update. Mike used a HipShot A Bridge, 17.5 mm spacing for this build and didn’t carve the neck back as much as for the typical 17 mm spec. BUT, I’ve discovered that the A style bridge can be further adjusted; and I’ve got it set at 18 mm spacing now, which is JUST FREAKING PERFECT for me. The strings are about as close to the edge of the fingerboard as on a StingRay 5; which was always fine with me. I suppose some players might complain about pulling the strings off the fingerboard. But, that is not an issue for me at all. 18 mm 5 string MTD. I am digging it BIG time.

Hey MTD guys & gals. I'm looking at a custom MTD build. Can you give me any idea what kind of weight range I can expect from an MTD 535-24?
My lightest 535 was probably around 9.2 pounds (I specifically requested light ash) and my heaviest was around 9.8 pounds. They come lighter and heavier but I’d imagine that between 9 and 10 lbs is typical.
