The black limba 535 I had was pretty reasonable in terms of weight. It was probably around 9.3 or 9.4 lbs (the top was macassar ebony and the neck was wenge).

Agreed, but Donovan did say it was a quick & dirty demo, and that more in-depth videos were coming. Those take more time to produce, and chances are that some will be sold before he has can do that.Those basses deserve a better demo than that.
This one is listed as 9 pounds 5 ounces. The lightest one of the bunch he has in stock.
I just don’t see the point of putting out a video that makes the basses sound sub-par.
Honestly, that would apply to all of Donovan‘s demos.
I usually watch his videos with the sound off just to get a good look at the instruments, since his photos are always very unnatural looking.

Heh heh, true enough. But sometimes a video with a more average player gives you a better idea of the sound than a virtuoso machine gun slapping the thing and playing a flurry of notes.
Absolutely. For example I have serious respect for Nate Navarro, and I don't expect that buying a bass or pedal that he demos will make me sound like him, but his demos completely skew expectations of what most people can expect, IMHO.Heh heh, true enough. I don’t want to see virtuosic playing in a demo: I want to hear some solid finger style in a couple of positions (e.g., over the bridge pickup and closer to the neck pickup) and, ideally, some simple thump and pop. I don’t want to hear chops, I want to hear the fundamental sound of the bass.Heh heh, true enough. If that’s true then I believe he’s obligated (as per TB rules) to disclose his status as a commercial user.

well the bass that @MusicMuse has in the classified is clearly in the same room Donovan demos his basses, so if it is not him not sure who else it would be...
Look through his post history and he constantly recommends fretspot and talks about how great Donovan is... I'm getting secondhand embarrassment

And for God's sake play the B string! Great player but I agree. I also don't care for demos where the bass is fed through an overdrive or distortion device. I want to hear the clean sound.
This actually sounds like a wood combo I might dig. What was the tone like? I am imagining dark and deep lows?
I would describe the tone as "elegant". Warm, punchy and compressed - but not overly compressed or "choked". Lots of grand piano-like overtones. Very solid low mids with a clear note fundamental that sat well "in the mix". It did have a darkness to it, but that darkness wasn't overpowering. Overall, a sonically very well-balanced bass. It was one of my favourite sounding MTDs and the only bass that I come close to regretting selling. Oh, and it looked fantastic.
