What's that stripe coming from the bridge?

A copper stripe of some sort, probably a grounding thing. Doesn't bother me much hehe.

It's the groundcable.
On the earlier Jazz Basses Fender didn't drill a hole for it, but put a copper stripe on it instead.

It was for saving money - at all cost, even looks...;-)

Hard to see but what is going on w/the bottom edge of the J bridge cover/ashtray - are those string ball-ends at the end of a bridge and if so was the ashtray custom cut-away at the bottom to allow that to happen?
