My guess is its the same idea as tire treads: when you are pressing with your thumb, you have very firm traction but it will actually be faster if you aren't pressing hard due to less surface contact.

It would be interesting to, 'test drive' (see what I did there?...)

acquired 2 weeks ago. Looks amazing wherever it sits in the house and even better playing.

I don’t remotely understand what is going on here. But I would LOVE to play this bass!

My technique has definitely changed after playing The Mule for a couple of weeks. I’m pressing less hard on the back of the neck, on the mule and my Jazz. Is it actually faster, probably not.

It’s kind of Luxurious. All other basses and guitars I’ve picked up in the last week feel like they should have it. Like the difference in crawling into a Toyota carolla vs sliding into a Volvo XC90 with Napa leather.

It thumps too.

Incidentally, my wife and I saw U2 a few weeks ago. Adam Clayton played a lot of sparkly basses I think you would appreciate, including a couple of Ps, a J, and a Warwick.

Short scale (30.5") V bass to exact proportions of the Gibson 58 V. Black Lima wood, Hipshot and Epiphone hardware. Most of the V basses I have built were mods from Gibson and Epiphone products but this one is scratch built.

Here’s my “new” collection. Here in Lahaina as some of you probably recall, a raging fire storm destroyed our town, including my house. I only made it out with a few items- one of which was my most prized bass- my 2016 Callowhill MPB5. The builder Tim was one of my best friends and he died only about 5 months after the bass was delivered. My wife and parents conspired to gift me that bass, so it is extremely personal.

Everything else I own burned. I lost 12 basses including my Shen SB200 willow, 3 guitars including a really nice Martin, all my amps including Bergantino cabs, all my pedals including tons of 3 Leaf, my Noble, a huge collection of strings including discontinued gut strings for my DB, just on and on. I’m constantly remembering other things I lost.

Well here is my new bass collection. Most was gifted for free. Some are “long-term loaners” I suspect will never be recalled back.

From L to R:

2006-2008 MIJ Jaguar- donated to a local drive to help musicians affected by the fire, and gifted to me. A fixer-upper with lots of corrosion and dust, but an excellent quality build and super fun jazz bass race car type player-nothing I’d ever pick out but stoked I have it.

2023 Fender Am Pro II PV - black night finish. I work for a sizable church organization which has a great relationship with Fender. One of our directors reached out, and Fender agreed to gift this to me. It replaced my lost old main bass, an American Std PV. I’m super humbled by their generosity.

MIM P with Seymour Duncan’s- dark red finish. Was “long-term loaned” by a great friend and guitar player I’ve done a lot of work with. Unsure of build date, probably mid 2000s.

2021 MIA Fender American Performer. I played in a band with a great singer/songwriter who bought this bass to record his album with. The week after the fire he had to make some hard decisions (no more work, main gig was Fleetwood’s which burned). His house made it, but he was moving to a new house (which burned) and couldn’t extend his old lease, so he moved to Las Vegas and “long-term loaned” me this one.

1991 Pedulla MVP-5 - I was playing at church a few weeks after the fire. My very good friend came from CA to lead our church in worship. He brought a new Taylor guitar which he convinced Taylor to donate to the church- and he says “hey Jas, I heard you needed a bass” and hands me this thing. Another “long-term loaner” I get the feeling he fell out of love with it over the years (he mainly plays a pre-CBS P - calls it a true Stadivarious). My mind is truly blown. He also gave me his MIJ Boss OC-2 “Octaver” which he never really fell in love with, and knows I lost one in the fire and truly cherish them.

I am truly blessed with great friends and loving community. Grand total - $0. I turned down a few other basses as well.

I’ve posted my old collection here before and also listed my lost basses in my profile, should you care to know. Here is an item I found in the ashes - the Hipshot key from my 1996 EBMM Sterling which my grandmother bought new for me when I was majoring in jazz studies at Temple University. Aloha everyone!
