Thanks for sharing your heard. I've somehow never came across a Peavey Zodiac before and it looks quite interesting.
Is the neck on the Gretch really wide or is the picture deceiving me ?

The Peavey is actually a nice bass. Very heavy and substantial feeling. Its got a very deep tone on the neck PU. The bridge PU is weak and I never use it. Of course the Maverick logo is not original. It came off a '72 Ford Maverick and just seemed to fit this bass.

I'm playing in a ZZTop Tribute band and like the early 50's P style instruments. I've had a few Peavey's over the years and all of them were quality. I had a nice Cirrus 5 for a few years and it was the best Bass I've ever owned. Lost it in a Pawn Shop for $300.00, long story but wish I still had it.
I don't ever use a bridge pickup, many of my Basses are Modded w/ 1 Volume to the Pickup in the sweet spot. In just the last year I've acquired 5 S. Korean made Schecters and I really like them.

This is it. Last one standing. Bought new in 2000 for my first working band out of college, maybe five years after I left. Standard Jazz, kinda pedestrian and noisy as hell. So I dropped EMGs and a BA2 onto it maybe a year after. It sounds good, plays good, and has a TON of dancehall history.

Only one I wish I had back is the 99 Hot Rod Precision (maple and sunset orange) I got for a NOS song about 2002. Wouldn’t mind picking up something cheap with humbuckers, like an Epi EB3, or trying my hand at building a new P from a kit. But really as long as the battery is alive, this one will always do me. (That said, been thinking for some time about taking it back to passive...)

And yeah, I been wanting to learn how to build and finish for a while. And the kits are cheap enough to not fret too much if I screw something up.

I'd wager that if you take those EMG's out and go back passive you'll wish you never bothered. I started using EMG's (the original P's & J's w/ Ceramic Magnets) in the late 80's and love them, putting them into everything. In the last few year have been experimenting with lot's of different passive's, kind of the "less is more mentality" and I've come to the realization that for the sounds I like, IMO the EMG's are hard to beat. The EMG's have an extended freq range, both bottom and high end. It's my opinion that I can always EQ out frequencies I don't want and I can't add something that's not there. It's usually as simple as rolling of the high end for me on certain songs. I really love the low-mids I get with the Ceramic magnets also. I'm not saying that there isn't some great passive pickups out there but, for me the benefits such as full range and no noise (esp. when you want the sound of a single J) outweigh trying to find the perfect passive pickups. YEMV

I’m not actually sure whether those are ceramics. Got them new in 2002, but don’t remember what other choices EMG had at the time. I remember they weren’t cheap, though. But it was definitely a big upgrade from stock.

If the paint isn't wore from your logo, you can tell the specific model of your pickup by the color of the EMG logo. A gold logo means the pickup uses Alnico magnets, silver means ceramic magnets, grey for ceramic and steel, and copper means it's a dual mode pickup.
It's my understanding the silver logo Ceramic pickups are the first one's (original) they came out with and for my taste I have found that I like ceramic magnets in my Bass pickups (even in Passive's). They seem to have that bump in the low mids that a lot of Bassist like.

Well that paint looks silver to me. Unless it’s grey. But they’re probably straight ceramics. I still like how they sound, even through my obsolete rig.

So yeah, it’s probably best to leave it be. If I want to play around with different sounds I can always pick up cheap used basses with different kinds of pickups (say, like an Epi EB3 or similar) to see how different things play with the new rig. For probably not much more money and lots less hassle than quality replacement passives would run me.

The Peavey Zodiac range were made in China. There was 3 models,a P-bass type called Zodiac EXP, the PJ BXP jpmcbride has and finally the Ellefson sig model Zodiac DE Scorpio, they added SD Basslines and a Phil Lynott inspired mirror PG.

The Zodiac DE continued the trend Peavey had with signature basses and the players involved. Sarzo,Jeff Berlin,Randy Jackson and Dave Ellefson all wanted sig models that were quality affordable instruments not limited to genres the fellas were known for. Sarzo got a big lift from seeing jazz guys playing his model,Duck Dunn briely played the Jeff Berlin Palaedium model. The Zodiac PJ's are sweet all rounders.
