Cool bass and all, but are you sure you don't mean 1991? An '81 had the original rounded-off pre-spike/point hs shape. As far as I've read, the spike/point design on L-basses was introduced in '82. It was first introduced in late '81 on the G-200.

I bought the bass in '83 from the guy who worked at the Music Loft in Raleigh. That means it was either an '82 or '83 neck. The original Fender Jazz neck was run over by a truck. After that, the guy went crazy with the mods. I don't think he ever figured out how to get the intonation set, so he sold it to me for $400 with the gig bag (1983 dollars). You have to remove the string to adjust the saddle; couple that with the fact it's a whammy and you need the patience of Jobe to get it right. Fortunately, I love a challenge! It is dead money now and the action is incredibly low. I added the Bart preamp and custom pickguard a few months back. Definitely kicked it up a notch to complete badass status. King of Clank!
