OK, not stupendous for anyone else but I'm a novice and this one will be my very first totally new bass. My new Ibanez GSR200FM!! Woohoo! Just got it at Alto Music in Orange County, New York. I left it there for a little tech work, so here are some pics I stole off of eBay that match it perfectly.....

Handmade in Santa Cruz, CA, 2008.
5 strings, 30" scale, tuned "a" to "f" in fourths.
RT's piezo/preamp and a passive custom 5 string mag soapbar.
Separate outputs, v/t x 2.
Walnut back and sides/bookmatched flamed maple top. Hollow, with flamenco bracing.
Custom D'addario flatwound strings (.080 to .022) courtesy Fan Tao at D'addario.
Light and resonant, balances perfectly sitting or with a strap.

That thing is quirky and plain awesome. I love the way you've got it tuned as well. I would never have thought to try that.

How are things in Malmo these days? Last time I checked, people were still day tripping on the ferry for some "shopping" in Christiana.
How are things in Malmo these days? Last time I checked, people were still day tripping on the ferry for some "shopping" in Christiana.
I have played "regular" basses-long and short scale..as well as baritone guitars/six string basses for a very long time, and would often switch, depending on the music I was doing. I wanted an instrument that was a cross between a baritone and a bass..a higher tuning then a standard bass so I could articulate various 3 note inside chords (as well as play Bach). I also wanted the right hand spacing of a "regular" bass so I could use the techniques I have developed. I like 30" scale basses for doing chord work, especially for adding a higher voice on the outside string as well.
So, a bit from a baritone, a bit from a bass..however, the instrument I came up with didn't "exist in nature".
I had played Rick Turner's Renaissance basses for a while, and loved the way they played and sounded, so it was a natural to ask him to execute the instrument, with a few other touches, like the magnetic PU (which provides a great "smear" against the piezo).
Before I pulled the trigger to commission the bass though, we (my local bass tech and I) constructed a prototype to make sure this idea would work..something I STRONGLY recommend. We made one out of an old dan electro piece of driftwood (the repro, not a NJ one!, I love those things) and I delved into the spacing and string issues as well, which were pretty complicated, but with the help of Fan Tao (one of the most well informed and gracious men I have ever met in the biz) at D'addario, it all worked out.

These days, there are no ferries - there's now a bridge over Øresund instead, which makes communications even more convenient, though - and, from what I've gathered, Christiania lives under a constant threat of gentrification, and may not be what it once was anymore. (I wouldn't know this from experience though, since I've actually never got 'round to actually go there) Apart from that, Malmö is sunny and warm at the moment. And, it's a nice enough city, I'd say.
I am working on the music Peter..going back to playing live improvisational instrumental music, with a heavy emphasis on Afrobeat 12/8 riddims, junk/found instruments banging out claves on brake drums, and free jazz saxophone..you know, sorta like Brittany Spears' latest stuff..;(
And there is some really beautiful and slightly disturbing (not mutually exclusive btw) music on your site..we like Mats G here in Chicago a lot.
