Pan it to the bridge pickup, MAYBE add a little bass, and call it a day!
I am not normally a bridge pickup kinda guy, but I gotta agree with you. The 'bridge' pickup on this bass sounds fantastic! I think that doublewound pickup really helps.
And for all of you out there who have played Pete's fretted basses, after playing this bass, I really do believe that Pete reserves his special magic for his fretless basses! Man, oh man, does this sound good! On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this tone a 12, at the very least!

The tone on that fretless is very full but lyrical. That ebony board gives it a lot of "support". Doesn't matter where you are on the fingerboard, it gives you a nice full responsive tone.

Anybody tried DR Black Beauties on their Skjold? I put a set on this past weekend and they are freakin' awesome!!!!

They look good, and sound great (for a while), but ultimately don't last as long (tone-wise) as uncoated DR's.
I'm very suprised to hear this considering DR advertises them as lasting 2-3 times longer as their uncoated strings.
I also use the DR Black Beauties on my Skjold Custom 5... and I agree, to me, they don't seem to last as long, but I don't mind.
I've also used a few sets, tho not on my Skjold, but on another bass with great clarity.
I agree they don't last as long as a regular set does especially if you're even halfway careful about wiping the strings down after a set and washing your hands before you play (or maybe even not).
IMHO, the "problem" is the coating itself. Yeah, it prevents your hand oils and whatnot from getting in there, but I think the coating itself degrades somehow over time and causes effectively the same problem. Also, you don't start as bright as you normally do (not a bad thing for everyone).
I think the ONE upside these strings have is not that they do anything to improve life, but instead, they reduce the SS "sticky" feel for those who prefer the slickery feel of nickel strings.
Basically, I look at these "effectively" as a somewhat longer lasting, somewhat brighter, nickel alternative. In other words, probably not worth all that extra money. Again, IMHO.
