Hey, I've been in touch with Pete about my strap, and for you fellow Skjold strap people, I'll pass on something he told me... He's decided to offer the straps without a logo for the month of January (but you can still get it personalized if you want). I'm still doing mine with the logo and the personalization, however. :) Anyway, after January, his time is going to be all about the next batch.

Just an FYI.

P.S. I'll also pass on something else he told me... because he's going to so VERY focused on this next batch after this (more organizational) month, he probably won't be doing much with accessories and whatnot, and email will probably be the best way to reach him.

So what is the consensus on Petes strings? At $36 for a 5 string set they cost about $10 more than a set of DR hi-beams would locally. Are they worth it?

That is the single set price . If you buy three or more at a time the price is 26.00 a set . I have never seen DRs for 26.00 or for that matter 36.00 . Where are you getting them for that price ? You can pay alot more for a set of strings too .

I would like to hear what the people who had them on this last batch think .

My local shop is Parkway Music in Clifton Park, NY. They sell strings there at fantastic prices. A 5 string set of DR hi-beams costs $24.99 plus tax. Feel free to call them at 518-383-0300 to confirm.

I think he might be thinking about juststrings or maybe MF, but they don't give you a break on 3 or more even tho they sell them at $33 shipped (as long as you order at least $100 worth of "stuff" anyway). Thing is, those aren't a hybrid string, either. You go to something that I think truly compares to these, now you're talkin' like the black beauties, and those are more expensive ($40 shipped).

I'm basing this off my understanding these are nickel plated stainless steel. Not just plain nickel or stainless steel. In other words, more comparable to a coated string, but much better.

WOW! Dude, that's insanely cheap! That basically means they're selling them at cost, since the MSRP is $50. Must be a "loss leader" for them.

I guess I will chime in as I have been using them for about a month now on my Skjold 4. The only DR strings that I have real experience with are DR Sunbeams, which until now where my favorite roundwounds.

These strings are Nickel wrapped over a Steel core, so they have elements of both types of strings. They have a good tension for me, I would guess maybe just a little bit more supple than the average roundwound. They have a nice top end, but are not too zingy. Pete will tell you that if you like DR Sunbeams you should like these, and I completely agree.

That said they seem a bit more aggressive than Sunbeams and are therefore more useful for slap. I think this is where the steel core comes into play. I am a person who likes to change strings whenever I have nothing to do, and so far I have no plans to change them out in the near future.

Exactly. That's what a loss leader is (I edited my post). However, note that Pete's strings are a step above a non-composite string, so it'd probably be more fair to compare them to the black beauties. What do (or would) they sell those for?

I actually just bought a set of black beauties there over the weekend and was charged $36.99 plus tax if I remember correctly.

Unless you order $100 or more of stuff, then of course they're essentially the same price. Still, that's definitely a loss leader for that store. He's making NOTHING on those strings.

Yup, and I don't mind it one bit! :D

I've spent hundreds if not thousands in that store in the past, and they are always busy. We have a guitar center around here, and they are never as busy as Parkway Music is.

OK my 2 cents worth.

I have a Skjold 6 string out of his latest batch that also have the
Skjold strings on them.

The first thing I noticed about the strings was the even balance that each string had across the entire tonal spectrum. To me this is one of the most important aspects of a string. A set of strings should be able to produce the same output per string. The B string was very focused with a rich bottome end, and the C string produced crisp highs with a bit of zing. The high end was very clear & articulate, and the bottom end was well voiced with the right amount of richness. There are no dead spots, and the string tension seems to be right on. One of things I really like about these string are the way they feel. They are very smooth with a 'freshly sprayed on string lubricant' type of feel. They also posess a nice slap voice, and a very very nice rich finger style tone as well.

I'm getting a set and I don't even own a Skjold yet! If anyone wants to know how they feel on a Roscoe, I'll let you know!:p

I've played both Small Equestrian's and Tbone's basses, and I love how the strings sound. Very even tension and response. The big thing for me is how prevelent the overtone series is in the tone - which makes the bass sound very "alive". But not harsh or brittle.
