So I just found my old 35mm film camera and I would like to start shooting with it again. It is a Minolta x-700, and i havent used it since highschool.

For those of you still using film, i was wondering if i could get some recommendations. For black and white, i used to pretty much stick to Kodak Tmax 400 as an all purpose B&W film. Any other B&W i should try? Also, i would like to pick up some color film. I tend to like my images to be vivid and saturated. Any recommendations for color film?

I think it's best to stick to one film and invest your time in shooting good pictures, rather than experimenting with new film all the time (of course, if you don't develop yourself, that doesn't matter).

I think I developed two rolls of film in my days in HS photography and then just shot Ilford XP-2 (c-41 process B&W) for the rest of the year.

My HS camera was an X-700, too! Great camera (sold it on eBay about 5 years ago). Someone else said it, but you could just shoot Ilford XP-1 and get it processed, then do the printing/enlarging yourself.

A lot of photogs seem to like Fuji Velvia 100 for vivid saturation when shooting nonpeople stuff.

Man, there are some great bassist-photographers here! I loved looking at all the great pictures. I'm a real amateur, but here are a couple I'd like to share:

This is my late father's Fat Boy in Arches NP (Utah) in 2007. Sad to say this bike is mine now--we had some awesome rides together, though. Just a little Sony CyberShot; jumped off our bikes for 2 seconds to grab this snap--the bike was still running!

This one was taken earlier this month at Sundance (again, Utah) with my new Sony SLT-A55V in panoramic mode. Held the camera above my head and panned L to R and this is what came out.

Again, great shots everybody!

Brad, I'm jealous! I have the Strobist videos, and there is *so* much to learn from those two guys - and they're really funny to boot. Enjoy, and be sure to let us know how it goes.

Is McNally in the Strobist videos too or are those all Hobby? McNally is about to release a new video set but i feel like it's gonna be pretty pricey. I will definitely report back here afterwards.

Ha! Found an old shot from college taken with Ilford XP-1. This fairly cool P/J Charvel Jackson got ripped from my car freshman year. That's when I switched to J-Bass.

The sweep pano function on those Sonys is pretty darn cool.

It's fun, bc. The resolution isn't always the best, and it sometimes makes errors stitching the images together. But it's fun for quick snaps like these. Here's one from Times Square:

So far the a55 has been a great camera. Love the AF video, too.

Should be mentioned that Velvia and Provia are slide films (not that there is anything wrong with that). I know Velvia is discontinued (although you can probably find expired stock),...not sure on Provia.

Slides are awesome, if that's what Linas is wanting.

Fuji Superia Reala and Kodak Portra seemed popular among "professional" wedding photographers for a warm, pro grade color negative film. I don't know of the availability of either though.

I know next to nothing about film cameras, actually the only thing I know is that there's an old SRt-101 in my house....somewhere. Might be a project for sometime this summer to figure it out and use it a bit.

He's not. But Hobby is releasing a 6 DVD set and McNally has his coming out - that's why they're touring together.

I really really like TMAX P3200. Although I've only ever shot it in low light it's probably not the best for Beach and Snow pictures (maybe if you use a neutral density filter on your lens).

I don't have any of my old photos from when I shot with film and I'm searching pictures done with P3200,...but it produces images with an incredible amount of graininess and texture to it. Some people might not like but I find it gives the images a primitive feel.

Velvia isn't discontinued, they replaced Velvia 50 & 100 with Velvia 100f.

Provia & Astia are still available as well, although they changed some things there, too (Provia 100 became 100 f iirc).

Just google Velvia 100 vs 100f for more discussion.

That said, I like slide film, but it's expensive.

Thanks, Vorago. I actually meant to throw a note in there asking what you thought about the b&w conversion.

I'll see how it looks with the train darkened when I have the time.
