I know that a lot if people don't like this style but I've always like the isolated shallow depth of field focus thing as well as tilt lens stuff. This is my first foray into such a style:

I dig it. The fact that you know how to shoot like this is evidence of your creativity and personal style. Most people won't get it and that's why their photographs won't amount to anything more than personal album filler and that's fine.

Now for the judgmental part. I think some people are missing the point of this thread. Poorly composed and poorly lit snapshots =/= photography.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder imo, when technical style is regarded over substance, it only makes for a technical exercise in the mechanics of capture, ymmv in judgement of course ; )

An actual double exposure on an old Nikon F 35mm in 1974 when I was in high school. Manually rewound the film after the first shot and took the hand shot over it and against a black background. I did photoshop this later to get the keys more original ivory color (notice the green artifact) Fun, though!!

Yes, but some of these are lacking in substance as well as technical ability, the ubiquitous flash burnt, washed out bar scenes are probably more appropriate for the chicks at shows thread than a photography thread. Call me judgmental and critical if you want suffice it to say that I don't mind to scroll clicking right by these snapshots.

BTW I wasn't slagging anything you created, nor was I trying to imply that technical ability or gear trumps style, but at the risk of being called a photograph nazi, some of the pictures that have found there way into this thread are rubbish. Perhaps all those years as a 1 hour lab tech have me jaded.

EDIT: Hmmm looks like ubiquitous bar scenes were in a different thread or deleted.

Fair enough ; ) I understand what your saying, it's not about confining freedom of expression.

I'm strictly a hobbyist as far as photography is concerned, that renders my stuff mostly outdoors, not the finer aspects in composition, they do need a bit of hiking to get to though ; )
They are just shots, but 5 or 6 shot's for 1 usable, simple communicative stuff, better camera needed too.

I would say that I hope the less experienced shooters here will back to back their images with other beauties posted by the more attuned here and look to improve their take, for their own purpose in keeping too. Cool ; )

Absolutely. There is a ton of merit to that. What it takes to get a shot. Carrying your gear; even if it's just a P&S, up a mountain side and waiting all day for the lighting to be right.

If you looked through the contact or slide sheets of prominent film photographers and see how many frames are wasted to get one shot. In that regard there is little distinction between a hobbyist and someone that get's paid

I may have jump the gun on my judgment though. I could have swore I saw a few pics in the past few pages of people in Halloween costumes gathered at a bar, but they seem to have eluded me. Those are the specific ones I'm referring to and they are candids; not really "photography" from an artistic standpoint.

Warwick.hoy, the photos of the people in the bar on Halloween were mine, but they've been deleted.

I posted them simply as lighthearted snapshots; they were never intended as being considered art.

If you look a few pages back, the photos I posted of the Wonder Woman doll were put there with the same intent: FUN!

I may have missed the rules to this thread at the beginning, but I didn't see anywhere that every photo had to be taken so seriously.

I believe that as long as the photos do not show full nudity or depict violence they are acceptable.

Will someone please correct me if I'm wrong?

Mike ;)

Easy tiger ; ) I think the resemblance to the 'chicks at' thread (which I dig ; ) threw the scent a bit, Wonder Womans travels are insights into her extraordinary adventure's, that's the difference I reckon :)
