THE Pedals for the SVT Sound

I had more time to play with the 300 tonight and I gotta say I really like it. I am really surprised by the "bright" switch. Usually that switch adds these glassy highs that I can't stand, but this adds more of a high end fullness, for lack of a better term. I have it dialed in so that when I activate it I get a nice tube- like grit. It's really nice because it adds that high end body but still retains a nice low end punch. It's very organic sounding, and I would have made a small bet that there was a tube in there. I'm not a big fan of having dirt all the time so this really works for me.

This is how I have mine set.

So, you roll back Treble a bit, and activate both Ultra Hi and the Bright footswitch? Very cool. The 3.5K mid setting is yet another way to tweak high end, but given the three aforementioned ways, I think I'd also prefer to use a lower frequency for the Middle control. Bottom line: tons of versatility in the EQ, and I can't wait to get mine in a few weeks (hopefully).

Yeah that's it. With the bright switch off, I get a nice full clean sound, just at the edge of breaking up. When I hit the bright switch the added volume adds a nice overdrive. It's a thing of beauty.

Played the hell out of this pedal last night. I thought there were tubes in there too. It's an amazing circuit. Just a word of caution......I see a few people saying that they are not playing as dirty anymore. I know this is true for myself. I wonder how much of a trend this is, but in either case, this pedal has turned me off from the really dirty tones in favor of this extremely juiced and hyped up slightly dirty clean sound the Super 300 excells at. It sits so much better in a mix than a clean tone, but still sounds more on the clean side. No pedal I have ever tried is as good at getting this type of tone easier than the Super 300. But having said that, it does grit up beautifully if that's your thing.

When I'm rockin' out -- even if it's regular classic rock like CCR, Tom Petty -- I like dialing in the dirt via Darkglass, Tech 21, or combinations of both and other. However I also get gigs* doing oldies (Elvis), traditional blues/country, classic Motown/R&B, where I wouldn't use crunch, I just go for warm overdrive (as you said, slightly dirty to sit better in the mix). Cool to know that the 300 will do both!



*Obviously that was pre-COVID, but maybe some time this year it'll be safe to get back to it again.

However, the incorrect EQ frequencies, very vanilla speaker simulation, and harsh bite switch make it fall just short of “holy sh*t!” levels of excellence for my very picky ears. Enter the Two Notes Torpedo Cab M. For the unacquainted, it’s a cab sim/IR loader with power amp simulation. On its own, it gets a convincing tube amp sound. You can select KT88 tubes which are very close to and arguably better than the 6550s used in SVTs. You can “push the tubes” to get a little grit, and coupled with the 410 SVT cab IR, you’d have a hard time discerning that it’s a digital setup. However, coupled with the VT Bass DI, you essentially have an Ampeg at your feet. Turning the bite and speaker sim switches off on the VT gives you a near perfect SVT overdrive and character when run into the 410 IR, and creating a custom eq on the Cab M using the frequencies found on svt front panels lets you to further refine the sound and allows for better tweakability than the VT DI does. You can even replicate the effect of the Ultra Hi and Ultra Lo buttons. I leave the power amp sim off when using the VT, so you can certainly achieve this sound with another cab sim and separate programmable eq. This is by no means a corporate or paid endorsement of these companies, I just like that the torpedo has everything built in. Hopefully this has been helpful to those who are on a quest to get that classic grunty sound! I’ll continue to experiment and drop any findings in this thread.

You can get grit with pedals, but there is nothing in the world that will add the complexity of tubes to your tone besides tubes. There's details, subtleties, dynamics, and harmonic nuances that only exist when your signal is passing through sets of tubes. Grit...yeah, my tubescreamer alone sounds pretty close to real drive. But, it's bland.

I own both. The simplifier is super polite whereas the 300 spits and snarls. Few more eq points on the 300 make it more versatile, and of course the ultra lo and hi take it to another level entirely. One is not a sub for the other in any way shape or form. I'd like to sell my Simplifier since it will sit unused now that the 300 is in.

Thanks. Do you use a cab sim with the Super 300? Or, does the cab sim on the Simplifier add a lot?

No cab sim on the 300. It sounds great as is IMO (although I am not averse to the idea of a Cab Sim). I do not own a dedicated Cab Sim.

The Cab Sim on the Simplifier is a very nice feature. I can't tell if it sounds like a cab or not, but it does place the tone more securely in a mix when using that pedal.
