The NTMB-918 is probably my favorite preamp and I currently have it in two of my fretted basses... I also have the 918-F in my fretless, which is supposedly dialed in a little differently for fretless basses.

I don't want to bum you out here, but I find that there's quite a bit of difference between the "standard" NTMB-918 and the proprietary Pedulla preamp.

The Pedulla pre has much more of a vintage vibe with a lot less high end in the flat position. I hardly ever add anything as far as onboard EQ goes, because most preamps add enough flavor for me simply by being engaged. The Pedulla pre, however, almost necessitates a treble bump at the very least to get a similar zing in the high end that my other basses have when set flat.

Also, I tend to really dislike midrange controls and never touch them, but when the mid-boost is on, the midrange character is similar to what you get with a passive bass. I really dig it.

Have you called and asked if they'd be willing to sell you the preamp without an install? I'd at least try that.

I honestly think they'll sound great with NTMB's in them, but if you really want the traditional tone that these basses are known for, I'd definitely try to get the real deal.

It's funny, I was watching Doug John's Pedulla demo videos and he seems to like to crank both the bass and treble controls.

Anyway, I have an email in to Pedulla pointing out the unfairness of charging for installation (diplomatically) when none is required. We'll see how that goes and if they are willing to give a discount. I know they have to make a profit on these things and I'm certainly not opposed to a reasonable markup, that's business.

Yeah, I saw that too and I tried it... doesn't work very well in my set up, but he can make it sound amazing.

Granted, I could probably readjust my amp to handle the extra bass going into it, but it just sounds muddy and overblown with the bass control dimed. Too boomy.

Pretty much every one of my effects pedals hate it too.

I will say, however, that it doesn't seem quite as out-of-control as it is when I dime the bass on my 918 preamps, but it's just too much for my tastes.

I think he rolls back the volume control on his bass when he cranks the bass and treble EQ to compensate.

I think he actually cranks up the volume on the bass and more gain than usual on his amp. Then u bring the master volume on the amp. I bring the master up carefully That seems to be working well for a great slap tone

Interesting... when I crank the bass and treble all the way and have my volume dimed on my MVP, I have to turn my gain control on my amp down quite a bit to avoid clipping.

This is true with my STM900 and my Puma 900.

By the way Chris, as per our earlier conversation not in this forum, have you checked into the state of your B string above the 12th fret? My next test, which I haven't done yet, is to actually pull out these pickups and see if it's inherent to the natural sound of the bass or it's affected by the pickups.

I have found wolf tones in the high frets when using tapered strings. Low E and B especially. On other basses than Pedulla. Went away with non tapers.

Well, I emailed Pedulla and Christine was unwilling to give me the specs of their version of the NTMB stating that the information was "proprietary". I find it odd that giving me or anyone else that information so that we can make an educated decision could be a problem for Pedulla.

Like I'm gonna go out and start my own business of making Pedulla copy Bart preamps. Sheesh!

I'm just a guy who's trying NOT to spend $425 on a preamp if he can avoid it.

Oh well, guess I'll buy the stock version and see how it goes. I can always sell that down the road if I don't like it.

I just spoke to somebody at Bartolini. The "F" designation is for Fretted and the "FL" designation is for Fretless. Just to clarify, Bartolini has 3 versions of the NTMB-918 on their web site. The NTMB-918, the NTMB-918-F, and the NTMB-918FL.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience playing both a fretless Thunderbass and a J/J Buzz, and if so, how similar/different did they sound and feel?

There are two sharp-looking six-string fretless Pedullas in the classifieds that I'm eyeing. I love the sound of the Buzz basses, but I've only heard them with P/J and humbucker configurations. I've never actually heard a fretless Thunderbass, but I understand they that use different pre-amps. Any and all info is much appreciated.

Crazy.

If you have your gain set that high with your onboard preamp and volume all cranked up to 10 and don't get any distortion or clipping, then your amplifier's preamp gain stage has a much higher tolerance than any amp I've ever owned.

Keep in mind, they come in standard or metric. I have several sets of allen wrenches which have both, and that's what I'd recommend you pick up.
