The Pedulla Club!

Used Thunderbasses: Am I the only one that’s noticed that on ebay you mainly see only cocobolo and zebrawood, and occasionally a quilt maple or bubinga top? Pedulla’s website lists other “exotic” top options as flame maple, red heart quilted maple, maple burl, arbutis burl and redwood burl, but I’ve never seen any of those come up for sale. I did see one with a flame maple top at a local Guitar Center a number of years ago, but I don’t believe I’ve seen one since.

Anyone have any idea why the “overload” on cocobolo and zebrawood and not much else?

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt
Speaking of, there’s a red heart quilted maple Thunderbass on ebay right now, the first one I’ve ever seen in the past several years that I’ve been checking Pedulla auctions regularly! The seller said he bought it brand new for his home studio that he never finished, so it’s pretty much mint. Very reasonable opening bid - $2000, with no reserve so it could possibly sell for that. Someone smart is going to get a great deal on a beautiful bass!

By the way, he's also selling a mint 4-string Buzz with a beautiful no-burst cherry finish. Don't see many like that.

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Why some pedullas say custom on the truss rod cover and some of them don't ? Is there a difference in the model ?
Also why some have 3 knobs and some have 4 knobs?
How is the tone of this bass ?
I think your bass is from 1989... But not sure ; is it still for sale/trade?

Thanks

For a whopping $1700 I just snagged a blue MVP5 off eBay with little to no wear and a few paint chips. It's set up as a P/J, my personal favorite setup.

This is an earlier 3 knob model that sounds and plays damn excellent. And when I put it thru a Line 6 Pod pro it's just a gas!

Sometimes you get just plain lucky!

EDIT: Looked up the serial number and it is a 1988 model. If it did not have a few small paint ships on the head you could almost swear it was new.

Here's my new/old 83 Pedulla Buzz that I had fretted. Not much into fretless, but I love the sound of these oldies. I found it on craigslist from someplace down south. Coudn't have been happier seeing as how I had been searching for one from this year in a natural finish, JJ pickups for maybe 15 years!

Those the standard electronics from then? My '88 has only three knobs and current are 4 knobs.

Holy smoke, that’s your third Pedulla in what, 4-5 months? Congrats on another great find!

As I understand, the thinking is that taper core strings maintain the fundamental better, especially with the lowest notes (e.g. third fret and down), while the large-diameter regular strings loose the fundamental (so you’re mainly hearing the harmonics). It’s because the taper core is able to easily make the tight bend over the bridge, while the regular large strings by physical nature can’t make a tight bend, but instead “radius” over the bridge.

That’s the idea anyway. I checked it out once after changing from regular to taper strings by feeding my pre-amp output to a RTA before and after the string swap. The RTA indeed showed that the fundamental was stronger with the tapered strings on the lowest notes (again, from about the third fret down, IIR). Knowing then what to listen for I recall that I could hear a difference. Noticeable, but not night-and-day drastic or anything.

Anyway, that’s what I know about it, basically from threads on the topic here at TB. You can do a search for “talk bass taper core strings” and find no shortage of threads on the subject. This old thread has a post with a picture and good explanation; it was the one that convinced me to try taper core.

That said, not sure why the explanation holds for the bridge and not the nut! Some basses bend just as hard at the nut as they do at the bridge.

Wayne A. Pflughaupt

I’m sorry, but it should be a crime to present a black-and-white picture of a Cherry ‘Buzz.

Just kidding (kinda) – congrats and welcome to the Club, Boba!
