The Pedulla Club!

Can I join? I picked up this beauty a couple of months ago.

Cocobollo Thunderbass ET5

I've had a Schecter Diamond Series Studio 5-string for the past three, my first five string. Being an entrenched 4-string guy going all the way back to the 70s, it was the only 5-string I had ever tried that had a reasonably good combination of neck thickness and string spacing that a 4-string player would be comfortable with. As you guys probably know, it’s a difficult balance, because wider string placing naturally requires a wider neck. The former feels comfortable to a 4-string player; the latter does not.

I decided I definitely wanted to stick with a 5-string, just not that one. Ultimately the string spacing proved a bit too narrow. By chance I came across a Thunderbass ET5 at Guitar Center that had the neck I was looking for. It had the wider string spacing I wanted, but the back of the neck is much flatter than usual, which makes it really easy to get your hand around it. That makes a neck width that would normally be uncomfortable for a not-quite-reformed 4-string guy feel quite natural.

Googling for Thunderbasses I came across a Craig's List ad with pictures from a guy in Phoenix selling one with a cocobollo top. Once I saw that baby, my jaw hit the table. It was simply breathtaking! That did it for me, not just any Thunderbass would do. It would have to be a cocobollo Thunderbass!

As luck would have it, several weeks later about the time I had the cash together, that guy put the same bass up on eBay! (Hey, how many cocobollo Pedullas can be for sale out of Phoenix at the same time? :D) So I snagged the beauty you see in the picture for less than half the $4700 list price. It’s only three years old and in perfect condition, which made the deal even sweeter. Plays and sounds great, too.

While I’m here I’ll put in a plug for my pride and joy, a one-of-a-kind custom hand made beauty called the Boogie Man. It was made by a guy who lives somewhere north of Houston, named Allen Breaux (sure wish I could find him). I bought it used from a guy I was installing sound systems with back in the mid 90s, paid only $800 for it - a steal! I've played high-end basses costing over $4000 in the stores that I haven't liked as much as this one. In fact, it’s even better than the Pedulla – I know, hard to believe! Lots of exotic woods - flame maple, wenge, purple heart, bubinga, etc. Any bass player worth his pick-ups will notice that the body is patterned after Tobias, and the headstock copies the Warwick Thumb bass. The body is a perfect Tobias copy, actually - I picked up a Tobias hard case on eBay, and it was a perfect fit.

So is there a club here for custom-made, one-of-a-kind basses?

since there haven't been many posts lately... Right now my band is taking part in a "bands contest" that will come out on the latin american fox tv channel. There are 6 bands "competing", 2 from mexico, 2 from colombia and 2 from argentina. As soon as i have action shots i'll try to post them...
anyways, my mvp has been getting lots of compliments from the other bassists, and even from one of the juries in the competion, bass player from mexican band molotov. Sweet!!! I hope some day my playing is complimented too, bot for now i'm cool with bassists digging my bass...
So what reaction do your pedullas get??? I suppose these are basses well respected by many bass players, but it seems not many actually choose pedulla as their main bass...

My band gave me a lot of grief when I sold my Pedulla Rapture 5 (medical reasons). That was about 5 years ago . The only basses they were happy with while I was experimenting with many brands were Rickenbackers . When I showed up with my Pedulla Thunderbass they knew the search was over and my wife (singer songwriter) said "when you get tired of that Pedulla it will be MINE !" Aint gonna happen :)

Hey Pedulla fans,

About a month & a half ago, I took my Pedulla into a local repairman (Ron Ruggierio, The Guitar Workshop, Philadelphia, PA). He did a beautiful refret on my dad's 1961 Fender Pbass & my 2005 G&L L2500, so I knew he could do my Pedulla some good. I requested a setup, as I was unable to get it perfect. The setup was great - he had to shim the nut slightly (cut too low at the factory). The action is a bit higher than it was before, but I can really lay into this bass now, and the tone is amazing.

Whew - played through my Acoustic Image Clarus & Schroeder 1210L, there is a clear, defined sound. My GF said it "sang like a bird" during my last gig.

BTW - I always get comments about my wooden knobs & tuner keys.

Hi,

Can't believe I missed this club; pics of my current trio are @ http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=400567&highlight=pedulla, but I've also got this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260284668997&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016 - on the way... I really wish I could afford one of Mike's ET models, but not yet.

I've never played a 6 - might be just too much for me, since the hands are starting to get painful - but I've had a ball with the Pentabuzz! The wider fingerboard makes the 4-string Buzz feel superfast when I switch back. I really love those fretless sounds and, after working through various amplification, compression, and speaker cab options, that Low B!

Mike's shop - not a factory - is an hour away and he's worked on all of my babies (well, not my son, who actually chose the color for the MVP). His "gal Friday" is Christine and she's VERY helpful. No tours - he's too busy and there are insurance issues, but he's made adjustments - even buffed the fingerboard on the black Buzz for me - while I waited (having had work done on the green-blue burst (he told me it's not Peacock Blue).

I'll post new pics after #4 arrives.

Best wishes to all!

I've never seen a plain, non-stained Pedulla that didn't have a quilted or flamed top. Can't tell for sure w/o better pix, but it looks like the whole thing was stripped.

I can't see the Pedulla logo on the headstock, nor the "R" on the truss rod cover. The bodies of both my Raptures (CAR single-HB 4 and Arctic Blue J-2000-5) are just as shiny as the pickguards; in that pic with the bass on top of the case the finish looks dull. Might want to contact Pedulla with the SN# to see if that's the original finish.

yeah, i was thinking it looked like it had been stripped too. i asked the seller and he told me "thats how it came" but he probably didn't buy it new. if i actually had the cash to buy it, i would contact pedulla and ask :)

ps - want to get rid of that J5 rapture? ;)

Here's a pic of my Bubinga Thunderbass ET5:
