The Pedulla Club!

Hey guys, what are you using on your buzz basses for strings?
I use the Pedulla Nickel PN5B (45-65-85-105-128) set on my Pentabuzz. They sound and feel great, and all the strings taper down to a single wrap at the saddle - very nice.

Pedulla.com said:
An important part of the design is the tapered core that goes over the bridge saddle. The Pedulla string tapers to one wrap at the bridge saddle (on the B, E, A. and D), which allows the string to focus rapidly on the fundamental and “make the bend” over the saddle with a precise angle, while keeping the tension just right.

What about these?

I use the Fender Nickel Round Wounds with the Tapercore B and E strings on my PentaBuzz.

Another vote for the Pedulla nickel roundwounds; they have a nice soft feel & great tone. I have an '88 Buzz whose fingerboard has never needing recoating (Michael buffed it a couple of years ago when I took him another bass for service), so I'm not worried about roundwounds!

Michael made that point about taperwounds in person, too - since he builds the basses and worked w/the maker to design his strings, I trust his recommendations. In addition to building great instruments, he's a really nice guy. :D

I'm having a single/dual coil switch installed in my Thunderbass ET5. It is the first step in trying to optimize the sound of my Pedulla. This is a much cheaper option than updating the preamp, or preamp + pickups.

I REALLY like the way it feels - just am not completely thrilled with the sound. I'll post an update when I get it back.

Hey, can you email me some pics of your wiring? [email protected]
I'd love to do the same to one of my T-bolts (modded 2 of them with Bart CBs and Nordy DC's, both with coil taps and Audere pre's, and the array of tones is amazing)

Jon,

It is being done by Glenn @ Bass Specialties. As it is his work, I will ask whether it is okay to share.

How does the Nordy DC / Audere sound? Were there any fit issues with the Nordys and pickup routes in the Pedulla? If it wasn't so expensive to modify, I think some Nordy DCs with an Aguilar OBP-3 with active/passive, single/dual coil, with Bubinga covers (to match the knobs and tuning pegs...) would be perfect.

Thanks, and hopefully Glenn will be cool with it :D

The Nordy's were not an exact fit to replace the barts that were in the body and I had to route out the body to fit the P2 shape of the nordy's (not a big deal since I have done this on several basses - Nordstrand may be able to make something custom that would fit in the narrow spacing of the tbolt/tbass). The tone is much more open, not as compressed, nor as thick in the lower mids (I'm not saying that the factory sound of my Pedulla was in any way bad - I do like the tone of the stock t-bolt), and with the 3-way coil splitter, there are a huge variety of tones I get from the bass (the single coil setting is very refreshing on that bass - gets in your face pretty quick, not a growly as my Rapture J/J, but it can make a strong statement).

I have classic barts that I've installed in another t-bolt (with an Audere preamp), and I lean more towards the classic barts over the Nordy's - I can't put a finger on the differences, becuase they are suttle, but just something a little different about the barts I like more - I'd go into the studio or on stage with either one of them and wouldn't have any sense of regret.

I'm trying to land yet another t-bolt or t-bass and will probably change out the pickups and preamp for either Nordy Big Splits or maybe try SGD's (the SGD's get a lotta love around here, and the clips I've heard sound really good).- Damn GAS

If you bought from the guitar center in CA yesterday, I left a message for Tony, their salesman on Sunday night, that I wanted the bass and want him to get the commision (since he responded to my email)... he failed to tell me that we wasn't working on Monday, so I lost out... yea, I'm still pi$$ed... congrats man
I'm not very big so I never tried playing bass until I found this.

I would be honored to join the Pedulla Club!

I decided to go with a new preamp in my Thunderbass. I'm having an Aguilar OBP-3 installed with the existing pickups, with the following controls:

Volume (with push/pull active/passive)
Blend
Mid (push/pull mid frequency selector)
Bass/treble stacked
single/dual coil switch

This should take care of a lot of sonic options. I'll get it back in about a week, with reviews to follow.

Now I have to order a stacked bubinga knob from THG knobs...
