I was under the impression it was recorded on his 60's jazz bass with the other basses then used on tour
I was always under the likely "impression" that it was this bass, the natural finish P fretless. If I remember correctly; he got this on the Police's first tour in the States, bought in New York, so the time line makes some se
nse. But that Ibanez showed up pretty early also as I imagine he got the fretless bug, had some more cash, and wanted a secondary fretless.

In reality you can play it on any bass I've nailed it on anything from a Jazz to a Hofner if Sting had to borrow a bass right before a show he could still play that song on anything think about it he's changed basses many times since that song was released and he stills plays it.
