The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

You have successfully capoed the drums. at least metaphorically. Congrats

...thank you?

And SVT, +a zillion. I really only look to a tab anymore if there's a really complex and intricate line that can be difficult and time consuming to transcribe by ear, but even then it's only to get note placement; everything else comes from listening to the groove on the track. In fact, I tell anyone I talk to to look at the chord charts or notation, if they can read it, because a tab shows you where you're playing, but not what you're playing. I think it's much more beneficial for a bass player to know note placement rather than just fret numbers, and I did the latter for far too long to easily break that habit.

...And Steve, all in love, but the comment about "everyone doing their homework" came off pretty condescending.

...Sorry for the rant, but it needed to be said. I won't defend click tracks with my life, nor force their use onto people who don't want to use them, but this seems to be the new "capo on guitar" here: viewed as a cheat when it's actually, in the right hands, a useful tool.
I'm sorry if you heard condescension in that sentence, or even the rest of that paragraph, as it was neither felt nor intended.

IMO, this is the big disadvantage to holding a conversation on a forum. In a face-to-face conversation, body language and a host of other signals make our intentions obvious, but a short sentence on a computer screen loses all those nuances.

That said, I stand by my post, at least as I intended it to be read. To clarify:

- I didn't call the click a crutch or a cheat.
- I mean to didn't criticize anyone else's use of a click.
- I didn't say that it should never be used.

On the contrary, I started out with a general expression of preference, then I explained why, and closed with a specific example of a situation where a click would be extremely helpful: in an environment where communications between the team members is obstructed by destructive interference from room echoes, distance or other factors.

We both seem to agree on this last point. Your mention of leading out a song at a very slow tempo, and of the need to synchronize with media clips from a remote location seem to support my position.

I think we're going to sing How He Loves & Beneath the Waters (I Will Rise) on Wed night. I'm leading on an acoustic Martin guitar that I was blessed with, praise God. A few months ago I felt very rejected and out of place at former church; I'm now leading worship again for mid week fellowship, found a new church that I love, and I have a bass again! I may have mentioned these already.

We're meeting on the roof of a parking structure for worship. I think it will be fun to worship in open air with high temp of 82F expected for Wednesday. No chance of rain.
God bless us all.

Very cool. Had no idea that you were without a bass though. I will need to pay closer attention to the thread.

Just posted this pic in the Jazz Bass forum as well.

It is a 2006 MIM lined-fretless with 60's CS pups.

It was at my house for a few days before moving on to young gal from my church who plays an upright bass at school.

I hope to see/hear it played at church one day.

I never played a fretless before. It was pretty cool.

How does one get a member number in the Praise and Worship Bassist Club?

Geri O

Tough Sunday. First service (traditional) went long, soundcheck went short so I never could really hear myself, so listened to the drums very carefully and timed my fingers. Weeeellll, during a quiet spot, I discovered my fancy new tuner gave me a drop D tune on the E. So instead of trying to think through the adjustment, I avoided the E until I could tune again. This with the new WD being introduced as well.
This in addition to cuts in songs and of songs to adjust for time. Pretty busy Sunday.

hope everybody elses went better.

I think I asked for a quick intro first.

It's not my club so I'm happy to take people's views on it. When someone asks for a number is it right to ask for a bit of information about them first? With most bass clubs you'd need a picture first - with this one should people at least confirm they're a P&W bassist?
