I've got a 5L and I only ever have the tone up full, so vol/vol make alot of sense to me...so yeah, if someone does this/has done it to a 5L, please post results etc. Hell, I might even do it myself...

Ha! I'm totally with you on that Chef, especially if you added in a real playing situation, e.g. in a rockin' band...
Strings & pups make "real world" differences, but fingerboard material?

personally, I do roll off the tone quite often, even with flats. I also think the 'fish are perfect as they are and would never modify one in any way, shape or form. YMMV, of course.

Normally, I'd agree with that stement in principal...
but in a JJ 'fish, the v/v/t setup vs XL setup poses a good reason to consider modding.
However, it's not really modding, just changing from one stock config to another.

Pickguards are easily replaced ... long as the mods don't involve cutting 'MOKCT' I'm cool...
that would of course be 'Mother of Kitchen Counter Top'
I modded my PJ to vol/tone/blend. no cutting involved. and i hardly ever touch the blend. my sound is just "full on". That said I've recently found a few tunes that could use to have the tone rolled off a bit, but very few.

I wish I had one of each in front of me so I could decide which configuration I like better. I'm quite used to and comfortable with v/v/t, but I really like the way my 5L plays and sounds. The three way switch is a lot of fun.
I can't decide.

The biggest difference b/t v/v/t and XL is series mode; which takes the two J pups and makes one big humbucker out of them.
Increase in output, increase in bass, decrease in high end sheen.

+1. They're no longer made and only available used, but lately they've been sitting on the market for longer and the prices seem to be stabilizing a little.
If you like the way they look, you should see how great they play and sound.
