I tend to play older strings on my 'fish and newish ones on my Sadowskys. Right now my PJ fish is sporting some older DR HiBeams. I like the deep funk of the older strings through the hot pickups - when the strings are new or even newish it's too bright of a tone IMO.

Dave: I think you'll love having rounds on the 5L again. It's one of those basses that sounds great with flats or rounds. I think you'd like it a lot in the gig you described.

Indeed, I am digging the 5L much more with a fresh set of Fender 8250s. I think they'll be on there for quite a while. My Fender P5, which I bought new 13 months ago, is still wearing the original strings and they've got life left in them.

You've got that bass now? Cool! She is a stunner. That's where I got my 5L.. straight trade with Andrew for the PJ. Sometimes I wish I'd kept that bass, but she's way too nice to be the "4-string that sits in the case on the off chance I switch back."

Yes, stunning, she certainly is! She's STILL sitting in the case too much...It's a reoccurring theme with rare/delicate finished instruments...

Anybody else notice the nut width specs on the new 4 strings...they're now, 1-21/32" (42 mm). The old 'Fish were a comfortable, 1-1/2"...curious?

Saw that, and was sad. These days I'm mostly playing my Will Lee, which has a 1.45" nut, so it would be a bigger jump than just from 1.5". The Rumblefish neck is one of my favorites.

Still want to try one some day.

We'll have to see, but the total 1/2" extra neck width (about 1/8" more between the strings) doesn't seem too much to manage. I will be a little surprised (and very disappointed) if it presents a playability problem for me.

I'm really disappointed with the new nut width. I know I haven't played one yet, but the single most impressive part of my Rumblefish is the neck--the most playable necks ever, IMO. If the new line of basses had just stuck to the original shape and size of the Rumblefish neck, I would have bought one without even playing it.

I'm also wondering about the 12" radius...I love the 10" radius of the Rumblefish. Oh well, wait and see...

What I notice is the 3/4" spacing on those Mercalli 5's.19mm string Spacing!! That is so much more tempting for me.

So Ken finally gave me the Mercalli 5 to take home and do with what I want. I raised the action a schonch, and put on a set of D'addarios I had lying around....took her to the gig, and WOW. HUGE difference. I set my controls flat on the amp at first. I eventually raised the bass, lower mids, and high end just a touch...more of a smirk than a smiley face...had the blend knob a touch more to the bridge than centered...freakin growl heaven.

Seems kind of high to me. Especially considering the MSRP on Reverend's website.
