I asked about which tuners I should get to swap out of my Dub King a while ago on this thread, which didn't get any response here. I took it over to the Reverend forums, then to email to Ken Haas. He responded very quickly (thanks, KH!) with the info that he measured the posthole at 17mm - actually, that's a little tight for all the ultralites (Res-o-Lite, Hipshot). They want 18-19mm holes, according to the literature. This probably means keeping the stock ferrules, no big deal.

He is getting in touch with Brad Hauser to see which Hipshots he installed in his. When I get this information, you'll see it here. Personally, I'm leaning toward the Res-o-lites, but I can be dissuaded. I know BH likes his Hipshot Ultralites.

Used the res-o-lites on a few basses and they are really smooth well made tuners. If memory serves they can be had just a bit bigger than the Hipshots. I like them better than the hipshots but they are just a bit heavier.

Be curious to see what works. As well as more input addressing what a difference it makes.

Yes, I put the hipshots on there. Pics posted a page or two back. I put the 1/2 cloverlites(?) on it. I did have to modify the stock holes just a bit, there was a tiny ridge at one side of the hole that had to be opened up just a bit for the 1/2's to slide all the way in. They did make a big difference, opened up the sound quite a bit and you do notice the neck feels lighter. Now I have to figure out what length of flats (TI Jazz flats) I need to get to be able to string thru the body. I have Diadario flats on there now but they werent long enough for going all the way thru.
As far as the Dub King tuners, I dont know if they are the same as the Mercs or not. From a manufacturers perspective, I would guess they might be, and if that is the case, the same for the hipshot 1/2's should apply.

Just heard back from Ken Haas (again, great customer service), confirming that 1/2" Hipshot Ultralites are the ones to use - he also said after checking with the factory, the holes are 18mm before finishing.

Went ahead and ordered a set - I got a good deal on the Y chromes, so did that.

Expect a review of the sound in a week or so.

Almost forgot I saw that bass a few pages back. So it was a noticeable difference in sound? Figured it would make the balance even better but wouldn't think it would make a big difference in sound. As long as its a positive difference though that is great.

How do you like the neck after playing the bass for awhile now?

DR flats shoud be long enough. The TI's might be cutting it kind of close.

It did make a difference in the sound. It sounds more open with even a little air underneath the note now, not so compressed. Brad Houser talks about it somewhere here in talkbass. I forgot where. The neck I love, the 34 scale makes a huge difference to me. Its not too thick or chunky, not as thin as some I've owned but I do not notice it being a hinderance in getting around on the board. It feels familiar, I can play some things without having to glance down for a reference point.

I was hoping for a report on TI flats. Chromes do sound amazing on my 5L though. haven't put flats on the Mercalli yet. Ive got some D'addario rounds on right now. Those sound great enough that I haven't considered trying flats yet.

I have tried most flats out there and chromes are good but I personally like the tension on the TI flats. Found the Dr's to be a bit closer to the chromes but liked the feel better.

Guess thats part of the reason there are so many strings out there?

Sometimes it feels like I'm the only person who prefers not to string through body.

Hi Guys,
I recently tried out a reverend dubking at Trutone in Santa Monica. I must say those guys are very helpful and courteous. I plugged it into an ashdown fliptop (30 watt). It sounded nice and growly through it. Loved the playability, the weight was nice, they look like they would be heavy but they are not. If I bought the bass I would change the tuners to Hipshot Ultralites to kill some of the sustain and open up the sound.

I am not sure about the pickups, I didn't like the musicman bridge pickup on it, I don't understand why it's even on the bass. To me this bass is dying to have a dark star put in the bridge pickup position. Anyone else feel the same way or even thought about it?

The bass is very well made, but I loathe the idea of buying a thousand dollar bass and changing the pickups and tuners on it. You don't see many, if any, in the used market, which either means they aren't selling or everyone who bought one thought it was a keeper.

I wanted to ask the guys who own these and have had them for a while, what do you guys think of the bridge pickup? love it? hate it? don't use it?
