Oh thanks! Ever since I smacked it up... it has kinda transformed into this modded BH5 beast!

I recently took the original pups out, and I'm now trying a pair of villex singles in it. They are amazing pickups with a really punchy, fat natural tone that sounds nearly identical in active or passive mode. They are also 14 oz lighter than the stacked J's I took out :eek:. (that's almost a pound of pickups folks!)

Of course I always miss the way it was... maybe I'll buy another one some day just to remind myself what I'm missing. :smug: One thing is for sure... After going to L&M like clockwork and trying every Sadowsky, Fender and G&L that walks in the door, I'm still smitten with this bass. The Rev just feels like home to me and that's where I'm gonna hang for a while. :D

OK...here's a topic I haven't seen yet it in this forum. As been mentioned by many, 'fish have a short upper horn, which depending on how you hold the bass, is a big problem or can be accommodated depending on your playing style.

For me, I've noticed that normally I don't pay the position any explicit thought and I accommodate my PJs and JJs naturally (the 5L however is problematic), adopting a playing position with the guitar positioned a little to the right from where my p-bass naturally hangs. I've noticed lately that this generates some tension on the strap in an outward direction. As a result, instead of just passively hanging, there is this lateral force that tends to want to pull the strap off the upper strap button, especially when my playing becomes more energetic.

Now I swore off strap locks of any kind some years ago after a spectacular flying bass failure on stage which resulted in a broken string, a set cut short, and endless humiliation from my band-mates. But I'm now wondering if I should revisit this. I have some important upcoming shows and I can't afford a loose 'fish. Anyone have any suggestions as to what strap locks might be best for a 'fish to handle this particular problem?

I'm using Italia straps, which I know are a favorite of many here, and they tend to be on the thick side. So I'd like a solution that would be able to fit these straps. Any recommendations?

The neck on a BH is wider than the 5L correct? I've forgotten what the difference is.

HI! I'm Cam. New to Talk Bass and fairly new to bass in general (~1 year). You guys had me so worked up that I baited the e-bay hook and snatched up the XL that surfaced earlier this week. I've named it Reggie.

This shot was taken after I reconditioned the fret board, installed strap locks (I will not drop this bass), gave it a general cleaning, and swapped the old 105 black beauties for Elixr 45/100s. The color is actually turquois...hard to photograph..I thought I was buying a blue bass. Nice surprise. She's in really good shape, not a scratch on the body, and the fret board has only normal wear. Good, low action.

I was searching for more punch and growl in my tone compared to Woodie (very old and custom):

I found it with Reggie. Very "articulate" compared to Woodie. I have CB Barts and VVTT passive controls on this one...it's extra smooth.

I love the tone options with the V/T/switch set-up. My band plays everything from the Drifters up through current radio hits. I need to be versatile!

What lurks underneath all the phenolic? Has anyone seen a naked 'Fish?

Woodie was abandoned in a wood shop in northern California many moons ago. It must be some kind of kit bass. Birdseye maple top and bottom "halves" and a 70's?? Fender maple jazz neck (set neck connection). Warm, smooth tone with the Barts. Sustain for hours. Neck feel is close to Reggie.

I got it from my brother when I started playing about a year ago. It had EMGs installed at that time, no controls. It took me a week to figure out that EMGs are active and the battery is hidden in the jack plate on the butt end of the body. Steep learning curve when you are a rank beginner! :bassist:

my favorite cure for the balance prob on the us revs is to put 5-6 3/4" rubber washers (black) between the body and the strap button, I used a slightly longer,'bigger screw.this pulls the nut closer to your body and reduces hand strain during prolonged playing in first position. you get used to swing the washers after a while. or get one of Naylor's anti neck dive straps. this washer trick helped balance and ergonomics on the BH5 a lot.

What type of amps are folks using with their 'fish? I'm playing an Acoustic 200 with a homemade 2x10 (Eminence BP102 drivers). This is my "rank beginner" set-up...no laughing. Sounds OK, but...I keep diddling with the 6 band eq, gain, etc. trying to find an old school tone. Think JPJ on Cream's Sunshine of your Love. Can't overdrive a SS amp like this I guess. I'm also on a "made in the USA" kick these days.

I was thinking about trying a GB Streamliner 600 or a similar tube pre-amp equipped amp. Other suggestions? thanks

I hadn't considered a combo. Right now I have the 2x10 at Bob's house (rehearsal spot) and I use this for shows (smallish bars, backyard parties, etc.). I typically feed to our band's PA, so I don't need super high power. I have a 1x10 (same design) at the house for practice. I carry the amp with the guitars.

Were you referring to the head (Mesa Boogie Walkabout Bass Amplifier) or the whole combo?
